Chapter 11 by ErstwhileFool ErstwhileFool

Does anyone make a suggestion? What game do they end up playing?

Gavin suggests the King Game

Gavin, his mind still filled with thoughts about what he had almost done with Taylor, tried to think of a game that might lead to a similar situation. There was one game that came to mind, but since he had heard about it on the internet he wasn't entirely positive on all of the rules. Still, what he knew would seem to serve the purpose. "How about the King Game?"

'What's that?" asked Zack, a bit surprised that Gavin had suggested a game he hadn't heard of.

"It's a Japanese game," Gavin replied. "All the players draw numbered lots and the one who draws the king gets to give a command to the one or two other players based on their numbers, so the king doesn't know who is going to end up performing the command they are giving."

"What would we use for lots?" Ashley questioned.

"Well," Gavin answered. "We could use a deck of cards instead. With 14 players we can use the ace through king of one suit plus the joker, and deal one card to each player. It would work the same way."

Madison, not sure she wanted to play a game where she might have to do something embarrassing with her brother, asked, "Is there a penalty if the players don't want to follow the command?"

Hannah jumped in. "Well, how about if someone does not want to follow the command, they have to remove one piece of clothing. That way you can get an out if there is something you really do not want to do."

"If the command is for two people, and one of them doesn't want to do it," Victoria began to ask. "Do both players have to pay the penalty?"

Heather replied, "Well, I think if the command could be completed by the remaining player, they would have to do it by themselves. Otherwise I would say only the first person to refuse takes a penalty."

Taylor, noting the hesitant expressions that Chloe and Victoria were still sporting and knowing her best friend's tendency to push boundaries, decided to add her own rule. "Perhaps we could also make it so the person who draws the queen can veto the command if they think it is too ****."

Zack, following up on his sister, asked, "If we are going to add the queen, should we add something special for the jack or joker as well?"

"The joker is normally a wild card," Heather responded. "How about if the joker can choose to replace one of the players who was chosen by the king?"

"What about the jack?" asked Kurt. "What are we doing for that?"

"How about making the jack immune to being chosen by the king?" Madison suggested.

"I feel like the queen, jack, and joker should all be immune to being chosen," Taylor replied. "Have it be a bit of a perk for getting a face card."

Sharon spoke up. "Wait, will the king know who the queen is? If the queen is a stick in the mud the king should know it before they give a command that instantly gets vetoed."

"I agree," Heather replied. "If the queen, jack, and joker are going to be immune, the king should know who they are."

"If the queen and joker are also immune," Meagan began. "The jack doesn't really have a unique ability of its own. How about the jack being able to protect one of the other players?"

Trent replied, "Based on the card they drew, or choosing the actual person?"

"The person," Meagan answered. "If you were just choosing a random card, there wouldn't be much reason to do it. This way you can protect a friend. And obviously the person who is protected will need to reveal which card they got so the king knows not to choose them."

Heather glanced around the room before speaking up. "Unless anyone else has another rule that they want, I think the rules we have are pretty good as is. Since we will be dealing out cards we should probably just stay play here. I'll go get a deck of cards so you guys can get comfortable." Seeing that her friends all seemed to be in agreement with the rules, she left the room briefly, returning with a deck of cards. "Who wants to be the dealer?"

"Well," Taylor began. "This was Gavin's idea, so I think it is only fair that he be the dealer."

Heather nodded and tossed Gavin the deck of cards. He barely managed to catch it, blushing slightly as he bobbled the cards. Opening the pack, he withdrew the one of the jokers as well as the 13 heart cards. Shuffling the cards, he got ready to deal.

Author's note: Here are the TLDR rules for this heavily modified version of the King Game:

1. Each player is dealt one card from A-K of hearts + joker.

2. The players who got the king, queen, jack and joker cards reveal themselves.

3. The jack then chooses one of the remaining players to grant immunity to. That player reveals their card.

4. The king then gives a command to one or two of the remaining players. These players are chosen based on values of their cards.

5. The joker can choose to switch places with one of the players who are chosen and/or the queen can choose to veto the command.

6. If the command is not vetoed, the players can choose not to follow the command, but must remove an article of clothing as a penalty. Only the first player to refuse pays the penalty if the command cannot be completed by the remaining player.

I will be using actual cards for some randomness for the results. As Duskford said in his game thread, no requirement for others to do so.

Who is dealt the king? How does the first round go?
