Fining the Fine Merchant

"I'm sorry miss, we'll have to ask you to pay your bill now and leave.", the girl returned, apologetic but matter of fact.

"What, why?! I'm staying the night!", Jorella protested.

"I'm sorry ma'am, management says you can't stay here.", the girl fibbed.

"But why?! What did I d-"

"It was your odor, madam, your foot odor madam. It's disturbed the other patrons and guests."

"But where will I go?!", Jorella was worried, she was in a strange city and already had made a false step.

"I don't really know, ma'am, we had the last room in town.", the girl lied.

"Please, please don't kick me out, I'll do anything!"

"Well, perhaps if you compensated each of our fifty guests fifty gold each."

"But...but that's so much money...", Jorella stammered, not even noticing there were no where near that number of people and no one seemed to notice or care she was barefoot.

"I thought you were rich ma'am?", the girl teased.

"I am, I am!", Jorella rebuked before dumping out all of her purse onto the table and piling the coins up rapidly. The girl swept the pile away and left her with only 6.

"Thank you ma'am."

"But that's more th-"

"Didn't you want a complimentary boot cleaning?", the girl swiped the boots and used them to hold the coins.

"I...I guess. But doesn't complimentary mean free?"

"No, you misunderstand, complementary, as in I will say how nice they smell!

"Oh, how fancy!", Jorella beams, eager to tell this story when she gets back.

Of course, her tale will be one for the ages.

"I think it might be time for you to head to bed miss.", the girl looks at the thoroughly sloshed Jorella, "Yesh, I guesh you're right. Goodbye everybody, guess I don't got much left to do anything fun anyway. Lucky I have my pocketbook..."

"Yes, yes, you're so lucky, the girl assures her as she leads Jorella stumbling up the stairs barefoot, and much much shorter without her heavy, expensive boots, you have the best room in the town!"
