Chapter 3 by lvup lvup

Because they can’t usually move much, where to begin?

Data on mimics (non-sexual path)

The champion posing like an amateur gave the example. The receptionist for a moment was impressed seeing the new level 1 rookie climbing the stairs, and entering the library to search more information, before trying to hunt. But that was only for a moment, because deep inside all want to see a dumb saviour that swings a sword to slays a beast ... And no one wants to see how many hours, and sometimes years of study are necessary to know where to strike.

Book after book the champion devours all the information there was about mimics, some whispers began to say the rookie was scared, other said that being too cautious will get an adventurer killed faster then being dumb ... The champion ignored all, and kept reading.

"The Ecology of the Mimic" by Ed Greenwood says that a wizard was tired of adventurers stealing his, so came up with a spell to animate certain objects and guard themselves. An interesting idea ... And here is another one, a compendium about dungeons and dragons ... hilarious name.

It says that is possible to bribe them with food, but they also like ****, one of the few substances that can cut through the adhesive that they use to trap their prey. This one is interesting also ...

It says that a Mimic can be anything, appearing everywhere. The note says that a Mimic is limited to imitating wood and stone, but the mottled skin can also look like burnished metal. It explains that the Mimic achieves these changes using a magical black ichor that it stores deep in its body. Nobody really knows what it is, except for that mad mage that created the Mimic in the first place. This books believe in all kinds of paranoia. And the guild feeds it. According to Greenwood, the magical black ichor that mimics use to alter their shape is used on potions to change shape. So the guild has a quest for the most daring adventurers to hunt Mimics for their precious and rare black blood. Is time to lear more details.

Mimics are weak to fire, and resistant to acid ... a small conclusion about so many hours of study, and all was wrong .. Every little detail on the guild made no sense for the champion, so it was time to walk away from the guild, and dive into the dungeon once more.

While walking slowly the champion began to correct the information. The appearance of a wood chest made humans that mimics are weak to fire, and some even added to cold. Because wood burns and freezes ... and they forgot that all things burn, and freeze. There is no immunity or resistance to fire, just weak magicians unable to produce a proper fireball ... all melts under the flame of a dragon.

The acid part was also interesting, the idea began when some adventurer tossed a bottle of acid against a mimic, and saw no result. More adventurers tried it without any result, so it was added to the books. They forgot that the shell is designed to protect the soft parts ... a small bottle of a weak acid can damage the mimic's tongue ... And if is a strong acid, it can even damage the shell.

The same for brute ****, hit the shell with a mace or a club, instead of a sword, and see the results.

After verifying the data, is time to add something more. The true nature of a mimic.

The idea for a monsters disguised as a treasure chest makes no sense, and was born when a weak adventurer tried to grab what was on the bottom of a heavy chest. After seeing all the treasures on the bottom, the weak and small adventurer lost his balance, hit the head on a sharp edge, and was locked inside ****. Bleeding while sleeping, he felt no pain while the essence of life was dropping out of him. After many years the chest was found again, and watching the leftovers of the small adventurer still with the blood marks, made the superstitious knight draw the sword to strike the evil box ... and a myth was born.

After clearing the story, is time for history. The purpose of a mimic is to clean a dungeon. Mimics are the ones that keep the are free of debris, corpses, gear, and all the rest. Without mimics it will be impossible to walk inside a dungeon without tripping in something. More than garbage cans, mimics are the ones recycling the dungeon.

When adventures open a chest and find precious gear, gold, or any other treasure ... they interrupted the digestion of a mimic. The digestion is a slow process, that consumes so much mana that even high mages confuse mimics with boxes. No one ever wondered why treasure chests are inside a dungeon, but now is explained ... all of them are mimics.

After understanding this basic truth, comes the next part, the way mimics collect things. The answer is also simple, mimics use the tongue. The mimic never wishes har to an adventurer, or a beast ... they get close enough, and the mimic tongue collects all on that area. And that brings us to the next part, every few steps there is a mimic. Or that was the plan, until mimics began to eat too much.

After mimics eat, they produce a residue of mana that leaves the box. That's how all creatures appear inside a dungeon. They are a residue of the mimic, tailored by the dungeon core according to the needs. It's almost funny seeing adventurers fighting minotaurs, inside a chamber ... and never wondered how the giant beast arrive there ... For them is all about magic, and even magicians never cared to study it.

And lost on all this, the champion arrived, is time to end this mimic

What's next?
