Continue on the Victory Road

The most direct route seems the wisest path, considering your need for haste. The Victory Road was dug and actually paved with stones hundreds of years ago, when it was named after the ancient King Heidsmark's victory in the War of Calamity. In those times daemons were far more common and held sway over entire kingdoms. It was a battle in this war where St. Magdalena wielded the very blade you carry and killed the powerful she-daemon Hecata.

In the centuries since this noble road was built, empires and thrones have changed hands and few kings have maintained it. Only travelers keep the grass down and the remaining paving stones - cracked and jumbled - are more an annoyance to stumbling horses than a sign of civilization.

Still, the wide road gives you a feeling that man holds some sway over the wild that cannot be completely erased by time. As Aegis rides, the moon falls behind clouds and you hear the distant rush of heavy rains. Only a light misting reaches you here and for that you are thankful. There is a chill in the air and you cannot imagine being rain soaked.

The steady movement of Aegis beneath you is relaxing and the big animal's sureness on the road puts you at ease. You nearly fall asleep after hours spent riding through the night, but you are startled awake by the appearance of an obstruction in the road ahead.

You slow Aegis at a good distance. It seems to be an overturned wagon and the strangeness of it blocking most of the roadway puts you ill at ease. There are lumps in the road that surely must be bodies. At least one appears to have blood soaking through a white tunic.

"Easy now, boy. Stay alert."

There is enough space that you could charge past the obstruction and continue on your way, relying on Aegis's speed to get you to safety if it is an ambush. But your duty as a paladin begs you to climb down and investigate what has happened, to see if you can render aid.
