Build a Cabin

You crest a hill and look down to see a grassy saddle dotted with clusters of spruce trees between here and the next peak, with trails of wispy clouds forming on a waterfall on the western ledge and fading to the east over a small lake whose outlet surely feeds into the great Cold River.

You walk down and are relieved to find that the air is much warmer here than most of the summits, and you might even enjoy walking barefoot on the cool emerald grass, if you were first warmed inside a house. The land is flat around the lake and you find a sturdy plot to walk around as if doing your daily routines in a modestly-sized house.

"Thinking of building here?" You turn to see that one of the green and brown shapes in the bushes next to you was in fact an elf, leaning against a fir next to a bundle of fallen branches he has collected. "This summit is elven land," he continues, "and any building that would disrupt the ecosystem is forbidden." He walks over and repeats much of what you were doing, pretending to live in an invisible little house. "However..." he walks to four distant spots and stabs four straight sticks into the ground, "this bit of grass is acceptable. Lay your foundation with cobblestone, for clay or cement would desolate the land if your house falls to ruin. Buy your building-wood from an Erosian lumber mill, and feed your hearth only with what twigs and branches from the ground you can carry in your hands - leave fallen trees to rot - so the high forest remains intact. You may hunt and forage all you need to survive, but nothing more."

He goes on to explain that he is Oron, the warden of these mountains, and is quite lonely as very few elves venture to such a high and cold place, and not for very long, so he welcomes your company and hopes that you will visit often to maintain your land.
