Chapter 5 by Sly Von Schwarz Sly Von Schwarz

Proceed with building?

Build it yourself - Success

Over the course of many days you haul as great a load as you can each day of stones, then logs, then other supplies. With everything in a pile, you begin your task. You churn the ground with a flail and lay the stones on the plot in a tight, irregular pattern and pound them into the dirt until they are sturdy and form a flat surface. You stack stones on one end higher and higher in a circle to form a chimney, with a window facing inward for the fire to be accessible. You begin to lay the logs on the perimeter of the stones, with carved notches holding them to each other until you can reinforce them with nails. You erect a framework of thatch for the roof as hundreds of wooden plates dry with waterproofing resin, then peg the driest ones on the edge, side by side, all the way to across, then begin for the next layer.

You work through rain and snow to achieve your ends, and on the final day, Oron brings you some cookware, pelts and other things to help you get settled in. You look back as you stretch your sore firm muscles and see a completed home. It is small enough almost to jump across, and is made in the most basic of methods with the most primitive of materials, but it's all yours in every sense, as you made it all on your own.
