Chapter 18 by grimbous grimbous

What are you going to do?

Be yourself

You stand there staring at her as she coughs up more blood and whinges in pain. You were no doctor but this woman needed medical attention. She was threatening to expose you. Threatening your very life. Dark thoughts were taking shape in your mind.

You take a deep breath. You couldn't do this. This is not who you were. You were not Vincent, you were not a killer.

You sigh in defeat, your shoulders slump. "We'll talk later. I'm going to get you a doctor."

Soo-yin looks at you failing to conceal her utter astonishment. Then she smiles knowingly. "Worried I'm going to die before you find out what I know...yes?"

"No." You state flatly. "Just worried you're going to die. You're right, I'm not Vincent. I'm just a guy caught up in an outrageous set of circumstances. I'm just a boring regular guy who isn't going to just stand here and let you die."

She is stunned, unsure as to whether you are a saint or a fool. You head towards the door. "Wait!" She coughs, "My phone, get my phone." She motions over to a nearby bench.

Feeling you had nothing left to lose you head over and grab her phone.

"Turn it on...the icon...the plain red diamond symbol...touch it..." She is really starting to struggle.

"Is this a trick?" You ask, looking down at the phone.

"...it..." She gasps, "...it will buy you some time..."

You press it and it disappears off the screen. Setting it back down you hurry back out the barn door. "Do we have a doctor out here?" You ask Louis.

"Uh...yeah, of course boss. He was patching up the boys. He's up at the house." Louis looks at you confused.

"Okay," motioning over your shoulder you say, "we need her alive. Let's get her up to the house."

Louis sighs again in frustration, "You're the boss, boss. If I didn't know better I'd start to think that you were going soft on me."

"Just do it!" You snap.

"We're on it." Louis and the boys head into the barn. You look out over the pastoral landscape, a warm sweet wind blowing in off the crops. You knew you had done the right thing, now you would have to live with the consequences.

What happens next?
