Chapter 9 by FantasyRoulette FantasyRoulette

After weighing all options, you respond:

9.1.f "I'm good with numbers. I could work in an office."

The guard thinks and says.
"Hmm, do you have any documents to prove this?"

You explain that you don't, that you were robbed (technically true, since the goblins captured you and took everything) and have nothing but the clothes on your back, some travel provisions, and a few valuable stones to buy something in the city.

"A shame you lack proper documentation, but I don't sense you are lying. I will refer you to someone who can verify your numerical skills."

Another guard escorts you to a station where a lizardman is reviewing documents. You may recall some information about his kind; they are typically tribal beings who don't live in cities, although exceptions must exist.

You are seated before him, and the guard explains your situation. The lizardman listens, takes a piece of parchment, writes down some arithmetic problems, and slides them toward you.

The math is very simple, basic addition, subtraction, and a few multiplications. You complete it without any effort. The lizardman examines your work, then nods to the guard. " This one speaks the truth. He knows mathematics and has been educated."

You are surprised. These were elementary problems, any grade-school child from your world could have solved them. You realize literacy must be rare in this world, with education limited to a privileged few.

The guard thanks the lizardman and issues you a small document granting city access and certifying your education level.

Fortune seems to be smiling on you. With your new credentials in hand, you're free to explore the city, though finding work should be your first priority...

Where do you go next?
