Ye Olde Ren Faire

Ye Olde Ren Faire

When a couple are gifted Renaissance Faire tickets they get more than they wanted...

Chapter 1 by Zekar Zekar

Once upon a time there was a couple that was extremely bored one autumn weekend. Rich and Kat had enjoyed summer, but with the turning of the leaves and both of them running out of vacation days their options for entertainment were limited.

One day while they were watching Princess Bride on Netflix there was a knock on Rich and Kat's door.

"Check it out," Kat said. "Could be a package."

Rich got up and grunted, "It could also be a damn door to door Cable Salesman. No, I don't want to switch to Cable Direct. Thank you, fuck off."

Rich opened the door revealing a small red envelope. Examining it revealed that it had a red wax deal with a cursive D stamped into it.

"Are you expecting a love letter?" Rich said flinging the envelope at Kat who caught it. She opened it up and read aloud from the parchment paper:

Greetings friends,

I hope this letter finds you well and able. You have been summoned by King Dimitri to the village of Morning Wood. Enclosed you will find free tickets to King Dimitri's Renaissance Faire. We are celebrating our town's founding this Saturday and wish for all to attend. 21 years old and over. Costume optional.

Cannot wait to see you,

King Dimitri

"Weird," Rich said, sitting back on the couch.

"It's not weird," Kat said, "I think it'll be fun."

"Have you ever been to a Ren Faire?"

"No, have you?"

"Nope."

"Well at least it'll be a new experience. If it sucks at very least we got out of the house and have story for our next beer tasting party."

Rich kissed Kat's cheek, "Sounds good. Want me to drive?"

"As if, I'm driving!"

The next Saturday Kat got up extra early and dragged Rich out of bed. She had looked up the drive and lucky for them it was only the next town over. After a bit of coffee they were on the road.

The drive was pleasantly uneventful as Rich blasted the dark and heavy music that was NPR's Weekend Edition theme. Near the woods they took a left down a nearly hidden dirt road. They had just thought they made a wrong turn when they saw an ornate sign that read King Dimitri's Renaissance Faire: A Magical Experience for All.

They found a parking space next to some costumed individuals dressed as Game of Thrones characters.

Rich and Kat walked up to a buxom blonde woman taking tickets at the front gate.

"Tickets, my lord," the ticket wench said.

Rich handed the tickets to her. She inspected them before placing them in her bodice. "Be sure to stick around for the closing ceremony! It's life changing"

Before Rich and Kat was a perfect recreation of a medieval village. It was obvious that most of these people were a part of the Society for Creative Anachronism or some similar group.

There were shop for leather armor, swords, corsets and gowns, candles, turkey legs, etc...

Kat looked on in awe, "Do you want to split up? We could cover more ground."
