The New Maid

"Here's the place!" The cabbie called past the cigar in his mouth. You could not help but stare in awe at the size of the mansion before you. It was absolutely spectacular, the enormous structure surrounded by an even more enormous property. This was where you would be working from now on?

"Hey, kid!" The older man shouted, making you jump. "I need my fare!"

"Oh, uh, yeah, sorry, how much do I owe you?" You squeak, thinking about your quite empty wallet.

"Twenty-nine fifty, cash or credit," he replies gruffly, eyeing you through the rearview window. You swallowed, barely mustering up enough cash to pay him his due. As he handed you back the measly two quarters change, you tallied up your life savings. Three dollars and fifty cents to your name, less if you count your student loan debt. Just one year in college and yet your debt was over fifty thousand!

Stepping out of the cab and retrieving your suitcase, you watched it speed back to the city. Taking a deep breath, you walked towards the imposing building. It took you over a minute to even make it to the front door! You walked past sports cars, marble statues, and immaculately trimmed hedges before finally reaching the front steps. Swallowing your nerves, you knocked on the mahogany entryway.

After a few moments, the door opened and an older man appeared. He wore an expensive suit and looked down at you with suspicion.

"And who might you be?" He asked, his voice filled with contempt.

"Oh, I'm Morgan, I'm, uhh, I was hired as a maid!" You hurry to produce the contract proving your words, thrusting it up towards him. He snatches it away from you, briefly scanning it before handing it back.

"It seems you are. The Madam was expecting you an hour ago."

You immediately flushed red, stammering "Oh, I'm sorry, I-I wasn't... there wasn't a time..."

"No matter," he interrupts, turning around dismissively. "Let's just get this over with! Follow me..."
