The Digitizer

In this story, a scientist invents a device which lets him enter virtual worlds like those of video games. How will he use it, or will he be the one getting used?

It was a rainy Friday afternoon. The small workshop was buzzing with the humming of a soldering iron. At least until it suddenly stopped.

"Heureka!" the voice of our protagonist could be heard. It was none other than the voice of David Smith, a 48 year old inventor.

The project David was in charge of was a digitization ray which allowed anybody to enter any sort of digital medium.

Unfortunately for him, being the project manager meant he was also test subject #1.
And today was the big day!

"Damn, Jim! I can't imagine what you got me into this time!" David said as he was standing in front of the ray.

Jim was David's lab assistant, they have been working together for 10 years.

"Yeah!" was Jim's only reply.

Even after working countless hours on it, Jim was amazed to see it in action. It was unlike anything he'd worked on before, and he had been a project assistant at the company on multiple cutting edge projects. His work on neural interfaces for drones had earned him a big bonus when it was picked up by the military. The handheld cold fusion miniature reactor won him and the whole engineering team an international award. But this project was insane.

It took all of his know-how, all of his technical ability, to keep up with the brilliant minds on The Digitizer. The Digitizer. That's how he thought of it. It wasn't just some random gadget, it was The Digitizer. The amount of new tech that was created in order to make The Digitizer work would revolutionize multiple fields of science, if the company decided to let it out into the world.
