You are Elisabeth, you grow up in a little village in the north of the kingdom. You parents had promised to marry you to the baker’s son for the summer solstice. That is happening tomorrow, but instead of being married you are in a cell waiting to be executed.

All turned for the worse three month ago when the dark plague racked the village. Many people died including all your family and your fiancé. Two weeks ago the mayor was found dead with your knife on his cold body. During the trial you explained that someone had stolen your knife during the night and you had hope to prove your innocence, till someone accused you of sorcery and to be responsible for the plague which killed all your family but let you miraculously uninfected. After that everyone considered you were guilty. The only point left was to know was for you to hang as a murderer or burned as a black witch. You are now waiting in your cell, with just as food to survive, for the inquisitors who will test you and seal your fate.

You hear the lock of the cell and the door opens. Someone in a red cloak enters with a burning torch on his hand, his face hidden in the shadow of the hood. “Meet the inquisitor” said the jailer before closing the door. You know their reputation for pyre building and stare at the man with fear. Even if you know that you are innocent of the , the trial and the look of the villagers has inserted doubt in you. You remember wishing dead some of the people who later died including your parents when they didn’t let you go outside with the others on the evening. You may be responsible for the plague without knowing it, why are you alive when they died?
Suddenly the inquisitor raises his hand to his head and lowers his hood to reveal the face of a woman. She has long black hair and a tight black collar around her neck. She is not particular beautiful but all of her imposes power and respect. “Look in my eyes” she orders to you with a cold voice. You sense she doesn’t expect anything but obeisance. As you comply you feel that she can read your soul. “Have you killed the mayor?” You don’t know if you heard her in your head or in your mind but you answer with a negative still looking in her eyes. She doesn’t ask another question for a long time and finally broke the contact by closing her eyes. How long did it last? You can’t say but you feel drained and have to lie on the floor before falling.

“Seriously, do you hope to survive the trial Elisabeth?” she asks you suddenly as she was ready to knock at the door to leave the cell.

What do you answer?
