Perfect Life+

You could barely sleep last night, the thoughts of finally turning twenty-one had made it nearly impossible. The thoughts of finally being able to drink without needing to beg your older friends to do it for you and able to finally tag along when they decide to go out on Friday nights had you more than ready for this birthday. Though you’ve barely slept, you’ve found yourself full of energy. As you open your eyes, the red numbers of your digital clock on your nightstand shines back at you, six in the morning. Twenty-one didn’t feel much different. Still at your dead-end job, living with your parents hoping to save up enough to get out of your small town.

Beside your clock is a present you hadn’t noticed before. A small, flat gray box, no larger than a DVD case, with a lace ribbon with a metallic glitter wrapped around it. The present has no tag, card or indication as to whom the present was from. You swear this same present wasn’t in your room a moment ago, perhaps you had unknowingly dozed off without realizing it?

Discarding your thoughts as to how the package actually arrived in your room, you decide to open your first birthday present. A cellphone! Sleek and gray but with indication of the brand or model; simply a power button located on the side and a touch screen interface with a camera on the front and back of the phone. Upon powering the phone on, it began to ask you to register. Name, address, retina scan, it even took your fingerprints as you held the phone during registration. Soon however your phone was set up, but you frowned.

It appeared as though the phone only supported two apps, a simple phone app and a second app called ‘Perfect Life+’. There weren’t any options to access any additional apps. Deciding to tap on ‘Perfect Life+’ you are greeted with several options: Search, Nearby, Friends, Family.

The app seems to be some sort of rolodex, keeping track of your contacts but seemingly preprogrammed with all sorts of people in your life already, along with the ability to search for new people as well.
