Werewolf.
A reductionist name given by mundane mortals to a species they will never understand.
Were- coming from the old-English word Wer, meaning Man. Wolf coming from wulf- which I hope I do not have to translate for you.
Man-Wolf. Perhaps a bit on the nose.
Of course the correct term is Lycanthrope, and the “disease” that causes it is called Lycanthropy. Humans who mix blood with existing Lycanthropes quickly fall deathly ill.
All but the strongest die in agony, but those that survive begin a new life.
