Over several weeks, as he was trying to get settled into the new house, Jack’s mind began to wander. Jack, admittedly, had a fascination with a few things. Those things usually, again admittedly, had some kind of kink or perversion to them in some way, and when his mind locked on to something, he was locked on. Recently, such a fixation had taken root on…

Could you really program someone’s mind?

Was it actually possible?

He didn’t really know where the idea had come from. He was surprised to find stories all about the InterWebs, apparently he wasn’t the only one.

He’d read about the experiments in the 60’s with subliminal messages in movie theaters to try to drive higher sales for soda’s and popcorn. The practice had rapidly been banned… but there was a great deal of speculation and debate about if it was ever really effective at all.

His mind began working overtime on the idea. It took him a few days and he figured out a means of tapping into the feed from every video box in house, so that regardless of what was being watched he could now insert a single frame out of every 60 with whatever HE wanted. With today’s HD technology, that was a single frame almost every other second. He knew the images where there, but it was so fast you couldn’t tell.

Next he worked on a much easier project. For decades shopping malls and departments stores had been trying subliminal under the music pumped out for their customers to enjoy as they shopped. The idea was to deter would be shoplifters. Again, the results were highly debated at every level. But, the technology was there and readily available. Really all it took was climbing up the ladder to each and every one of the speakers throughout the house wide sound system, and running a second set of wires back to his study where, ultimately it was wired into a computer that was solely used for the subliminal messages going through both the TV, and the stereo. Regardless of what might be playing locally, as soon as any audio began to play the computer would input whatever messages he’d choose. Same with the TV. Even if a BluRay was playing, or TV or Netfilx, whatever, after a few minutes the computer would start pushing through the subliminal messages he chose.

He laughed when he was all done with it. All the time and effort he’d put into it, and… no one to test it on. “What the hell, it gave me something to do, right?” he’d asked himself.

A couple of weeks later he’d gotten the call. The game changer. He was being asked to take custody of his twin “nieces”, his friend’s daughters Jessica and Megan. “What? What do you mean will I…? what’s going on? What’s wrong with Mike (his friend) and Julie ?”

The lawyer wouldn’t budge, only saying that if Jack didn’t take them they were going into foster care.

Of course he said yes. He received the paper work via courier the next day, and was told that the girls would be along in a couple of weeks.

It was all so… Odd. None the less he’d immediately signed the paper work and then took his AmEx to Ikea in hopes of putting a room together for them. He’d chosen the large bedroom next to his. His walk in closet ran the length of the wall they’d otherwise share. He was sure that would keep noise from either the girls, or from him, bothering the others.

He’d gotten a call from some friends and gave in to the idea of him hosting a little poker game one Friday night. When it was all over and the last of his guests were finally gone, Oliver thought, "DAMN! What a night!" as he walked back into the house. He'd just walked back inside after seeing everyone off. Jesse had brought his wife, who then called the other wives, who called a few friends, and the next thing they had pretty much a full blown party. The guys had tried to play cards, but the ladies were getting kind of wild and one thing led to another and now he was down a full bottle of the good scotch and 4 bottles of champagne! They guys were surely getting laid tonight! He, alas, could not say the same.

Brian went up and changed into his swim trunks, figuring a good long soak in the hot tub was just what he needed after the night. As he was crossing through the bigger living room, his bare toes felt something definitely NOT carpet. He stepped back and looked down as he bent over, "What the...?" and then he broke into a loud laugh. he picked up 2 baggies from the floor. One, he had no doubt, was packed full of coke. The other had several different pills, he recognized the Xanax, but wasn't sure what the others were (some XTC, Vicodin, morphine and Adderall). "Damn," he chuckled, "someone was planning on a helluva night, and is gonna be pissed when the find all this is missing!"

He jiggled the baggies between his fingers, still laughing slightly, as he headed into the kitchen. As it wasn't really his thing, preferring good booze or high potency 420, he just absently tossed them on the bar top before fixing himself another drink. Another minute later he was outside pushing the button for the hydraulic lift of the hot tub cover, "just what I need. A good hot soak on a cool evening." He sets his glass on the side of the tub and… stopped. He looked this way and then that way. Seeing nothing but the lights from patio, and the shadows cast by the high shrubs of the oversized back yard, Jack decided “Fuck it!” and dropped his shorts off before he stepped over and into the tub. The 104 degree water feeling perfect as the jets kick in, the bubbles from the seat tickling at his man parts. As he sat back and relaxed, he again wondered when Jess and Meg would finally be there. Maybe then he could find out what the fuck was going on seeing as their parents weren’t taking their calls nor returning his messages.

He shrugged, "I'll figure it out later."

Does anyone show up?
