Chapter 1 by Deregas Deregas

The Deneril had forged the Ancient Machine countless millennia ago. For what purpose, no one knew, but even after those ancient gods left the Machine it continued with whatever task they had left for it. Continents would be moved, civilizations raised up, only to be destroyed. The Machine was constantly making changes to its surface.

And those who lived upon the Machine grew to live with the changes. Cities would be built so that the shifting of the plates would not split defenses. Farms would move with the redistribution of fertile soil. And always people would plunge into the maze like depths below the Machine's surface in search of the Deneril's power.

In time those that sort to delve into the Machine organised themselves into a guild. The Adventurer's Guild was situated in the town of Marth, due to its proximity to a major entrance into the Machine. The guild grew in power over the years as its ranks grew. Adventurers would be asked to complete other tasks such as removing bandits, defending caravans and exterminating monsters, and in return the Guild would split the fee with the party. This system solidified over the years into one where less experienced parties would take on these jobs, working their way up to a point where they would be allowed to enter the Machine proper.

In this here archive, located in the Adventurers Guild headquarters in the town of Marth are recorded the stories of these parties. Please, peruse them at your leisure.
