A lonely world
Chapter 1
by kodi
Sarah sat hunched over on the stoop to her small suburban home. Her head rested between her knees, sobbing. She was dirty, sweaty, and exhausted from digging all day, her hands were aching and calloused from the wooded handle of the shovel. She just finished burying her beloved father in the backyard. He looked as if he might just pull through late last night, he was up and responsive, talking to her. Then things took a turn for the worst. This so called "Mega-virus" took him at around 2 A.M. Sarah spent most of the night crying. It wasn't until about noon that she managed the courage to dig his grave. The smell had already made it's way through the house. In fact, the whole town of Newsbury seemed to have the same smell. It made her nauseous and she couldn't stand it.
Just after 3 in the afternoon, the hole was dug. She stood over for a while. She couldn't get over the thought of her father laying in there, rotting. She had ****. She wrapped her father in the very bedsheets he died in and dragged him through the house and out the backdoor. Another sobbing fit hit her before she pushed him in the freshly dug hole in the ground. It just wasn't fair. She supposed she couldn't just sit here and cry all day and finished the job she had set out to do.
That night, Sarah barely slept a wink. The telephone was out. Internet out. Cable out. She had no communication with the outside world. No idea what was happening. The last thing she saw broadcasted on the news was the state of emergency broadcast that repeated over and over again. It simply put that a highy contagious virus had been set upon the world. It listed steps to prevent the contraction of this disease. But mainly it told people to stay in doors and avoid others at all costs.
Everyone else in Newsbury was dead as well. At least most of them, anyway. Sarah thought she would go out and search around town, but as she walked out on to the stoop she plopped her firm ass on the steps and cried some more. She knew what she was going to find. Did she really want to see it.
Does Sarah venture forth? Or stay safe at home?
