You win somehow

"Just follow my lead," Blue barks as soon as the battle begins. "They should only have physical attacks, be careful letting them get in too close," he advises further. You nod as he orders his Squirtle to stand in front of your Charmander as they both ready for the opposing Ekans and Rattata to approach.

For the first few minutes, you and Blue coordinate well enough that Squirtle and Charmander dodge all the enemy attacks, though neither of you can get a successful counterattack in. Ekans and Rattata both swap Bite and Tackle attacks, trying to time their strikes to catch either of your Pokemon off guard. No matter how deftly they can dodge, though, their opponents are too fast for returning Water Gun or Ember attacks to land.

After enough of this fruitless back-and-forth, Blue gets visibly frustrated. He commands his Squirtle to change formation, making him stand side by side with Charmander and instructing you, "Keep going just like that! We can get them eventually. Long range attacks are gonna be useless so wait until they get close!" You nod, trusting that he has some sort of plan that needs your cooperation. The next few swipes from Ekans still go after Charmander which end empty for both sides while Rattata still fails to hit Squirtle.

Without much warning the two grunts also change their strategy. Instead of focusing one of their Pokemon on each of yours, they both target Squirtle. They seem to be trying to knock out the stronger trainer first. You panic slightly, getting Charmander ready to throw out a flurry of preemptive attacks. When you see Blue smirk out of the corner of your eye, however, you stop. He seems so calm that he must have expected this to be a possibility. He tells Squirtle to stand its ground this time, ordering his Pokemon to use Withdraw to cover any weak points.

When you first see this you are confused. In this state Squirtle won't be able to dodge or fight back! Just before they both pounce on Squirtle with coordinated Bite attacks, however, you realize what Blue had been planning this entire time. The moment Ekans and Rattata latch on to Squirtle's shell they completely stop moving. It's only for a few seconds, but while they are futilely chomping down on Squirtle's hard shell, Charmander has a prime opportunity. You order Charmander to throw Embers at them all, scorching all of them indiscriminately. Ekans and Rattata recoil in pain, taking direct hits from the fire.

Blue only now commands Squirtle to counterattack, jumping on the opportunity that Charmander created to knock Rattata out of the fight with a swift Tackle. Rattata is sent flying backwards, landing at its trainer's feet helpless.

Now that it's a 2v1 the battle deteriorates quickly for the formerly cocky Team Rocket members. Now that Squirtle and Charmander can both focus on Ekans there is little it can do to dodge the barrage of attacks. Though most of your attacks miss, enough of them do land that the battle soon ends in victory.

The demoralized Rocket Grunts don't even have anything to say as they recall their pokemon and leave in a panic. As you both recall Squirtle and Charmander you cannot contain your excitement. You hop in place, throwing your hands up to cheer your victory. Blue brings you back down to earth, however, putting one hand on your shoulder and holding out his other, waiting for you to give Charmander back until the next time he allows you to battle. You reluctantly give him the PokeBall before following him, finally walking away from the disappointing, empty gym.
