Chapter 80 by BlueKnight
You have decided that...
You decided to tell them who Brittany is and also to have a conversation with them.
"Why is my sister not with me?" You asked them back in an attempt to pretend to be Francis by displaying concern about Brittany.
"Pardon?" Frederick asked you back, not understanding what you mean.
"One of the women that came with me is actually my younger sister." You said while also staring at them with an emotionless face.
"May I know which one? After all, she deserved a seat here with us." Albert said as he's looking at you.
"The one with short brown hair." You said as you are keeping your eyes on them.
"Oh! Her! I shall informed the coachmen to stop and bring her here right this instant!" Albert said and he immediately signaled the coachmen of both carriages to stop and tell them that Brittany can come to sit with you and them due to being the newly-inaugurated Viscount's daughter.
Soon, Brittany is transferred to come and sit with you. And judging from her grumpy face, she does not like it at all because it means she can no longer chat with Miss Blue and Miss Stella.
Then, the journey to the Azure Palace, the local royal residence of New Rotterdam, continued on.
"So... what are your thoughts on democracy? You two appeared to be highly educated people. So why don't you wanted to improve social conditions and let the peoples have their voices?" You asked them back, curious why the government decided to not do such a thing despite having the power to do so.
"Oh! We have democracy, Mr. Williams." Albert said gleefully with a smile.
"Really?!" You asked him back, cannot believed what you just heard at all!
"Yes! After all, all opinions of all noblemen are equal!" Frederick said as he's looking at you with a smile.
"Pardon?" You asked them back, wondering why just the opinions of all noblemen are equaled.
"Only us the nobles can voted, Mr. Williams. The peoples who lacked high education cannot be trusted to make the right decision." Albert said as he turned to look out at the window and see the activities that are going on in the market such as people are talking to each other or buying each other's products.
"I see. So this country functioned on Nobles' Democracy, where only the noblemen can voted and have opinions considered as equal among themselves regardless of their ranks, economic status, ethnic backgrounds and maybe, even faiths." - You think after you heard about such a concept from the two noblemen.
"And how big was this country before the recent expansion?" You asked them back as Brittany is sitting beside you while looking at you with concern in her eyes.
"Before the recent expansion? Just New Rotterdam here, the capital that is The New Hague that located a little further inland, the villages surrounding the capital and the lands that connected between The New Hague and New Rotterdam here." Frederick said as he's looking at you and Brittany.
"And religious worship? How are the people who are not Calvinists are treated?" You asked them, wondering how are the Christians of the other denominations and the peoples of the other religions are being treated in this country.
"What are Calvinists?" Brittany asked, wondering what does such a term really mean.
"Calvinists are members of the Reformed Church like me and Frederick here, little lady." Albert said as he turned to look at her for a moment.
"And peoples of all faiths are free to practice their faiths according to how their traditions stated as long as they remained loyal to the Crown. For examples, the Muslims, the Jews and the Catholics always prayed for the royal family to live long and prosper." Frederick said as he is looking back at you.
"At least these guys have some brains. They know that if they went with religious intolerance policy, their reign would not lasted long." - You think to yourself as you can see that these guys are indeed know what to do.
"What about slavery? Does it existed here?" You asked them back with concern in your voice.
"Here in the Kingdom of Utrecht, we do not tolerated slavery. In fact, it has been outlawed for centuries now. And with the Bezanists tirelessly worked to paid for the liberation of all slaves they come across, slavery will always never have foothold within our borders." Albert said as he's smiling a little when mentioned about these Bezanists.
"The Bezanists?" You asked them back, wondering who they really are.
"The Order of Beza is the actual name of their Order, it is named after Theodore Beza, one of John Calvin's disciples. Their goal is to buy all slaves that have been brought to out country and set them free. One of my sons is a member and is helping their just cause." Albert said as he keeps smiling while thinking about his son who is working for this religious order to help freeing all slaves they came across.
"Does that mean they usually go there to Axeman City and Port Williams to buy slaves and set them free? Sorry for never noticing them, fellow gentlemen. It's just that-" You asked but one of them raised their hands and stop you politely.
"It's okay. Most people that saw them usually do not cared about their activities anyway according to what we heard." Frederick said, indicating that the slavers do not cared if they set them free after they purchased them while others preferred to just minding their own businesses.
"I guess like everywhere else, this kingdom is not perfect. But it is still somewhat better. And now that Axeman City is under their occupation while Port Williams is now their a veiled protectorate, things may eventually become better in the long run." - You think as you looked out the window and begin to see the royal residence from afar.
What awaited you and your companions at the Azure Palace?
