Chapter 6
by Trom1806
So which will you choose? What will your route be?
You decide to go around the ruins of the city of Atlanta on the eastern side to reach the river.
Conflicting thoughts arise in your mind: “Going straight towards the ruins of the city of Atlanta is most likely very dangerous. As far as I remember, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was a very significant logistics point. In addition, important aircraft manufacturing enterprises were located somewhere in the northwestern suburbs of this city. Therefore, it is most likely that this city was bombed by nuclear missiles during the last war... If this is true, then the level of radiation contamination in the central areas of the city will be extremely dangerous. So I shouldn't delve into the ruins of Atlanta.
Should I go to the nearest native settlement south of the city ruins? I don’t know... The experience of meeting aggressive local residents fills me with fear...
And one more thing: what if the proximity of this settlement (Fortress Jackson) to the ruins of the city is risky in terms of radiation contamination?
I don’t want to test these fears on myself at all...
What other options are there?
However, judging by the words of a local resident who almost killed me with a piece of sharp rebar, to the west of the ruins of the city of Atlanta there is a large settlement of people... What did he call this settlement? City of Axeman! Of course, it will take me a long time to get there (about a week)... And one more thing: I will have to find a way to cross the river... However, I obviously should get closer to this river: human settlements are usually located near water sources. Probably, near the river I will be able to find local residents (for example, fishermen) who can help me ... "
So, you have decided to go around the ruins of the city from the eastern direction. Now you will go north, and then (after a couple of days of travel) you will turn west.
Your goal is to get around the ruins of the city of Atlanta on the east side, and then go to the river. After this, you can make a further decision: find a way to cross the river and come to the City of Axeman. Or there are other options: for example, you can find some local resident with a boat who will agree to help you travel along the river to the south.
You are aware that your plan is extremely risky.
It will take a long time to walk.
Anything can happen during these days.
And, given what you have already seen in this “new wonderful” world, basically all sorts of terrible things happen to people here.
However, you want to quickly get away from the ruins of this city, which was once a bustling metropolis, and from the ruins of bunker No. 78-PHE-S.
The thought that both of these places are places of powerful radiation contamination makes you quickly walk away.
Of course, you could go in other directions. For example: north, south or east.
The problem is that in these directions, judging by the information you have learned, there are no nearby settlements.
You reasonably assume that walking through these steppes and canyons without the slightest hope that you will find a settlement of local residents is practically suicide.
So, you carefully take step by step through the unfamiliar steppe terrain, looking around and anxiously awaiting the emergence of threats.
Sad thoughts in your head: “I lost almost everything... How many years passed while I was in the cryostasis capsule? It’s unclear... But it was a very long time... Most likely hundreds of years... My whole family... My children... My wife... All of them have already died... The most terrible nightmare in human history has already happened and I can now see the consequences... Only the instinct of self-preservation and the remnants of scientific curiosity keeps me from taking **** measures... Otherwise, I would probably end my life myself..."
Still, you want to survive and find a place in this world, despite all the hardships and dangers.
You mentally try to cheer yourself up: “The situation is not the worst... At least I have weapons and supplies!”
Continuing to walk among the small hills that are overgrown with grayish grass, you clutch your automatic pistol in your palm. In your bag (which hangs on a strap on your shoulder), in addition to water and supplies, there is a box of bullet for the pistol. Your body is wearing a bulletproof vest.
Obviously, in your current situation, you will have to make the most of any useful things and any opportunities to ensure your survival.
So, you continue your path through the wasteland.
A gentle breeze blows across your face, forcing you to squint to keep the dust out of your eyes.
The light of the sun shone brightly and heated the small rocks that you encountered on your way among the steppe vegetation. Nimble small lizards (about 10 centimeters in size) quickly ran around these rocks, looking for food.
You thought, recalling the experience of your meeting with... “large” representatives of the local fauna in bunker No. 78-PHE-S: “I hope that I will be lucky and not have to meet lizards whose size is larger...”
As you walk, among the flat expanses of the wasteland, you occasionally see the ruins of buildings that are overgrown with strange moss. The openings of the empty windows of these buildings evoke in your mind sad thoughts about the destroyed human civilization. Most of the walls of these buildings are either piles of broken bricks or concrete structures overgrown with moss and grass.
After a couple of hours of travel, you see the remains of the road. There is little left of the asphalt.
The wind drives along the cracked asphalt everything that it brings with it from the wasteland: scraps of tumbleweeds and sand cling to cracks in the asphalt, to crumpled rusty lampposts.
Sometimes, in addition to steppe grasses, sand and all sorts of debris, on your way you will encounter dense thickets of agrimony and some unknown shrubs on the branches of which you notice thorns.
You try to carefully avoid such places.
Some of the hills, upon closer and more careful inspection, turned out to be the remains of the foundations of destroyed buildings. Dirt, moss, grass - all this almost completely covered the remains of these structures, which may once have been home to people.
Some of the building ruins you notice as you continue walking are more visible and larger.
Hoping to find at least something useful, you carefully search such places.
In vain.
After many hours of travel, you find in the ruins of a building overgrown with grass and moss, which was vaguely similar to a gas station (this can be assumed judging by the fact that you noticed several rusty examples of refueling equipment for cars - these devices are twisted, there are many large holes in them and completely no gasoline).
What did you manage to find inside the ruins of the building?
Unfortunately, you again have nothing to brag about...
The most remarkable thing you found was the crushed and dried corpse of a rat. It's practically a skeleton. Someone ate this rat meat a long time ago...
You sigh in disappointment.
You are almost about to continue on your way, when suddenly you hear a noise.
Looking through a huge hole in the wall of the building, you understand what exactly happened.
It started to rain.
Raindrops fall from the sky, on which you see bushy, lead-colored clouds.
The risk of freezing and getting sick due to traveling in the rain is clearly not an option for you. Therefore, you find the most suitable accommodation inside this destroyed building and stay there.
In this room, at least a piece of the roof has been preserved in which there are not many holes...
The rest of the gas station rooms are just ruins of walls...
You take some of the supplies out of your bag and eat.
While you are **** to wait for the rain to stop, a couple of hours pass. Evening time is coming. You will probably have to camp at this place for the night. Your journey will continue tomorrow.
You clear a place in the corner of the wall and you prepare some kind of “improvised” place for the night. Your bag will act as a pillow.
As you reflect on your experience today and listen to the sound of the rain, you fall asleep.
So what will happen to you tomorrow?
