Chapter 13
by Scaio
How does the hunt goes?
You can honestly say it goes well
It’s been about three hours since you started hunting and your plan on leveling yourself faster is not so workable as you imagined. Even after all the wolves and random giant insects that you killed level 6 was all that you had to show. As you look back at the tiny figure of Nyx, you inadvertently summon her sheet once more and deciding it’s probably as good of a time as it can be, you take another look.

Curse of Knowledge: (Curse) as a unique class privilege, you are granted advanced knowledge in your field, but the weakness of your bloodline turns this gift into a curse. A special method is required for this effect to be removed. Until the effect is removed, you are prohibited from using any spell besides the most basic of magic.
Goblin(?): Your bloodline is different from other of your race. You will not be treated as a goblin in your interactions with other races due to your lineage. (The other part of your lineage will remain hidden until your power grows to a certain point)
Neutral: You are not aligned to good or evil, but this does not mean both will accept you. Your lieges alignment will greatly influence the views of others and with time, your own alignment may shift in one direction.
Necromancer (Inexperienced): The knowledge of necromancy is revealed to you, but the little glimpses that you have seen are not enough to make you a full-fledged student of the art. You will need to learn more to be recognised even as an apprentice.
Cairn Maker: As you defeat your enemies, they will very rarely leave their remains behind in the form of a cairn. While you can normally summon undead from any corpse that you have killed for a short amount of time after ****, using a cairn will increase your chance of success and also grant special perks based on luck. This ability will also influence all your allies, also granting you the ability to use the corpses that you have not killed.
Spells
Sapping Sting: You sap the vitality of a creature within range. The damage cannot be healed by conventional means and the enemy may even fall prone after a certain amount of damage is taken
Toll the Dead: As you point at an enemy within range, it fills the space that surrounds it with the sound of a bell capable of piercing its very soul for a moment. The target will take a certain amount of damage based on its Wits score, conventional means can not heal the damage. If the enemy is already wounded, the damage taken will be increased.
It’s quite the stat sheet if you can say so yourself, at least if compared to a normal monster, you know fully well that your status as an ex abandoned avatar has left you with the stats equivalent to a monster of at least 15 levels higher. In the long run, maybe it will not be much, but for a “starting” boss, it surely is a nice and welcome boon.
“Ok Nyx I think it’s time to truly concentrate on you now.” you say as you bring yourself to full height after having recuperated the loot bags of the last spider you killed.
As Nyx brings her eyes to yours you see a bit of sadness reaching her and with her characteristic small voice she speaks in response, “You don’t need to bother with me so much, I know I’m just an error. Maybe the system just wanted a mascot for an event”
“Don’t put yourself down like that, there may have been an error, but it certainly was not you.” you try to reassure her, closing the distance that separated you and placing a hand on her head in an attempt to comfort her. “You seem to have going for yourself some of the more rare feats that a boss can have. It’s the fact that the system decided to spawn you as a goblin mix-blood that’s bringing problems” as you speak she looks up to you and noticing your smile she start blushing and on instinct brings her hands to hear beanie just to interrupt herself realising it and instead grabbing your hand in a rare bold moment that seemed to wash over her from time to time.
“If… if I wasn’t a mix…mix-blood, maybe you and Alyanne would have killed be with the others since I would… would not be so cu…cute?” As she speaks, she tries to sound sensual, but her involuntary stutter just makes you smile at the absurd cuteness she is capable of.
“Yeah, not possible. Even if you were some other race, nothing could make you less cute.” You say as you rise her to one of your shoulders before walking again, noticing the smile on her plump lips.
After a while of walking in silence, avoiding useless fights with mobs of low-level monsters, the sounds of what you judge to be a dispute between monsters attracts you. After carefully approaching, you manage to finally have a picture of what’s going on.
Level 8 Giant hyena
Monster, Leader, Beast, Explicit
Level 5 Hyena
Monster, Beast, Explicit
Level 3 Hyena
Monster, Beast, Explicit
Level 4 Hyena
Monster, Beast, Explicit
Level 7 Hyena
Monster, Beast, Explicit
A pack of hyenas, a rare encounter if you remember correctly, especially with a leader type among them. The beast however do not seem to be fighting anymore and many bear the signs of battle, and then you see the cause just in front of the pack leader a black and red spot that miraculously still has a sheet showing that it’s still clinging to life.
Level 10 Dire Wolf outcast
Monster, Special, Explicit
“Heh, what do you know? A unique” you whisper to yourself as you continue to observe pitying the unlucky beast. That train of thought is however derailed by the pressure that Nyx is exerting on the side of your head where she placed her arm for support and you simply find yourself sighing as your wings appear and with a swift movement you have the petite companion slip into your arms bridal style.
After a quick leap, you find yourself between the two factions and with a gesture that barely shifts your position, a flickering circle of light forms around you and the winded wolf, signalling that your sanctuary spell has taken effect. As you calmly put down your companion, you try your best to not do any sudden movement and after her feet are on solid ground, you address her.
“Nyx, I’ll help to keep you safe but you need to do the killing this time” as your words reach her and her face turns pale, you sigh again and speak once more. “Do you trust me?” At the new words, her expression turns to guilt before you simply smile at her and rise to your feet.
The battle is not the most exciting as you just allow yourself to cast you compelled duel on the enemies as soon as they try to target Nyx, on the other hand she shifts between her two spells stunning the pack with the chime of Toll the Dead and slowly chips away at their heath with Sapping Sting. In the end, the battle ends with you receiving the lion’s share of experience even if the system seems to recognise Nyx’s participation, judging by the four cairns that have taken the place of the normal corpses.
“I still can’t do anything to them” come her words as she sees your smiling face clearly misunderstanding your intentions.
“Have faith” you say as you turn your head to the only creature still alive beside the two of you “We have to deal with her first” as you speak you once again use your magic to cast Ceremony on the poor creature allowing her to finally steady her breath. The wolf, in fact, had lost her previous battle only because her condition had already weakened her.
In fact, you already judged the situation the same moment you had read the name, a special monster encounter aimed at the companion quests of rangers and other classes that could gain companions. Normally a hero could just go into the nearest forest, bash a poor animal and then heal it repeatedly until a bound was formed. But if one was lucky and persevered, they could find a plethora of hidden quests such as the pregnant Dire Wolf. If you just guarded her during the birth and thrown a piece of meat at her, she would give you permission to take one of the cubs, allowing for an advanced bound with special skills.
During the fight you had used an obscure variant of the ceremony spell to allow for safe delivery giving her the chance to bring her pups into the world, not having any healing capability you were unable to really heal her and she was already too far gone for any food or herbs so you simply granted her the chance to accomplish her will and save her children.
“Can’t we do anything?” Asks Nyx, as she finally assesses the situation herself.
“I’m sorry,” you simply say, still saddened in your own way
Hidden Quest objective has been completed: Protect the Dire Wolf outcast while she gives birth
Special requirements have been met:
Have a necromancer in your group
Try to save the wolf in a **** situation
Defeat all the attackers by yourself
Nyx will receive a special reward
The voice this time is the classic “voice of the sky” the automatic one not the, apparently, almost self aware that you have.
The Wolf mother recognised your intention to protect her and asks that you use her body to create a follower
Accept?
Yes/No
As the small necromancer moves her hand to touch the yes option, you gently grab her hand and, seeing the doubt on her face, you direct her attention to the cairns that still await at her back.
“Do you trust me?” You ask again and this time are met with sheer determination, making you smile warmly. “Then let’s see this done”
After your words Nyx still doesn’t move swing as she does not know your plans, so she brings herself to ask “What do I need to do?”
“You need to create a magic focus, in your case, a staff.” you say as you go to each cairn and fish out some bones and the skull of the leader. What a broken feature you find yourself thinking as you find a common gathering node and tap it a few times to receive some wood.
3 x Small bone
Skull of Leader Hyena (rare)
Long branch (apple)
Added
“Lucky me” you say exalted as you bring your harvest to the confused Nyx “Use these” you say as you sit next to the still breathing wolf leaving your companion a bit confused “Ok, ok, my bad. I should explain. It’s for a special feature that spell-casting classes have before reaching level 10”
Still confused but clearly curious, the small necromancer sits across from you and waits for instructions. “So, you have an occult crafting skill, so this will be easy. And since you are also receiving guidance, the results shouldn’t be shabby” as you speak, you caress the mane of the slow breathing creature at your side and begin the accurate explanation.
“You will need the bones as a proof that you have killed your enemies yourself, meaning that you understand the value of life and ****. The skull is a welcome bonus since it contains the intent of a powerful foe, showing that you understand that **** is not the end of those around you, but just the start of a different kind of existence. The wood represent the life in the equation, and apple wood is among the most fitting since represents life and generally it’s said to seek passion, good nature and companionship” as you pause to allow your companion to add each ingredient you see still some doubts in the glances that she gives you from time to time “Life and **** are inevitable, you don’t need to feel sad for the dead because their life has already been filled with experiences that would have been impossible without the looming shadow of an end. Those that we kill we kill to survive and go on living and inevitably we bring part of them with us since they helped forge ourselves into what we are. Even those that kill indiscriminately have their place in life since their presence brings the rising of heroes and brave ones willing to stop them” as she looks at you with slight awe now, you just finish your “lesson” on a philosophical note “**** has no purpose without life and life has no meaning without ****, so both are just different aspects of the same existence. Now take out the “Treasure” and put it in the skull”
With a surprised look, Nyx moves her hand, retrieving a fist sized ruby embedded in a chunk of obsidian that almost seems to have grown fused to the gem, forming a gloomy red and black star shape. As she brings the gem close to her creation, a blinding light envelops the makeshift item announcing the completion of the crafting process.
Hidden Quest objective has been completed: Apprenticeship
Special requirements have been met:
Receive guidance from someone with a higher ranked magic skill
Receive guidance from someone with THE highest ranked magic skill
Use crafting materials compatible with your class
Use crafting materials procured by yourself
Use a unique ranked crafting material
The voice stops as the results of the hidden quest are calculated and you can’t stop but laughing at the dumbfounded look plastered on the face of your companion. Soon, however, the result shows in the small hands of the necromancer and a few pop ups appear revealing the rewards.
You have crafted a unique rank item from your class exclusive equipment list
You have comprehended some secrets of your class advancing your magic rank to apprentice
You have comprehended unique secret knowledge of your class gaining a unique subclass (White Necromancer)
Item will be named and bound to the user, allowing for item evolution when materials and required user rank are reached
Do you wish to name the item yourself?
Yes/No
As she reads the last sentence, her eyes meet yours inquisitively, finding you simply shaking your head with a knowing smile. And after she presses the No option visibly conflicted, a new light shines and the results are shown.
Unique item will be upgraded to special class after receiving a fitting name (Rapture, Crusader of Lost Voices)
Item creation complete
Arkus wishes you a fulfilling experience
As seconds pass and nothing is said, the eyes of your companion open and close as if waiting for a dream to disappear “What just happened lor… Razi… ehm. Master?”
You laugh at her embarrassed attempt and speak as you signal her to move closer. “I don’t take disciples, Nyx. Now let’s do this right.” You say as your hand reaches for her and puts it on the wolfs head summoning a message once more.
The Wolf mother recognised your intention to save her and asks that you take her as your first companion
Accept?
Yes/No
“I don’t understand” are the only words that she comes up with after reading the message.
“The world has more depth than you can imagine Nyx, hidden secrets are far more common than anyone can count.” You say as her hand follows yours almost trembling “I told you I had an idea to go around your problem.” you say as she presses the option in front of her “My word is absolute and if spoken is as good as certain. I just omitted to tell you will not just get a simple skeleton rabbit out of it. Wanted it to be a surprise for my favourite necromancer, a way to thank you for accepting to follow me”
Dire Wolf outcast is being brought into your following
Due to her willingness, a greater part of her being is being transformed
Due to special skill, the rank of the follower will be raised
Due to special equipment, the type of the follower will be changed
Dire Wolf outcast becomes special race (Grave Wolf), maintaining part of her will
A highly intelligent follower has been detected, loyalty has reached the maximum amount after rank up
As this time is your system that speaks, a white ethereal wolf with black bones covering part of its head rises in place of the wounded wolf that was in front of you a moment prior
Level 10 Grave Wolf
Monster, Undead-beast, Elite, Explicit
“Mighty fine if I can say so” you speak, bringing the still hanging hand of your companion closer to the wolf. Her hand reaches the bone plate on top of the creature’s head and before making contact is the wolf itself that bows to allow her now master to touch her. “She will need a name, however”
“Her fur… it’s beautiful like silver.” comes the late response of Nyx after a while as she still touches her follower in an attempt to make sure it won’t disappear.
Do you wish for Grave Wolf to be named Silver?
“Yes… thanks” her words are still unsure so you rest there for some time with the four cubs drawing closer to you as their mother sits, allowing for better observation on the necromancers’ part.
“Ehh… Why the hell not? The forest will need some wildlife after all.” You say as you raise your hand and will an invitation to the raucous puppies.
Do you wish to invite the Dire Wolf cubs into your domain?
The question arrives, moving the heads of the other “adults” present and you simply nod as the puppies are enveloped in a small hue of light before running around like nothing happened.
“They’ll grow with levels and there is not much that can truly harm them in the domain.” You say defensively as you feel the gazes of Nyx and Silver on you. But as you speak, you realise with horror that you will need to catch them before bringing them to your domain. “Should have kept them closer, eh?” You say as your companions giggle not far from you.
Sorry to all those that follow. I had the mighty Rona and due to some other reasons found myself taking a long break. Hope to post new chapters soon since I had plenty of time to write stuff. Hope you continue reading and giving input. Thanks to you all.
