Chapter 21

Next.
You begin Phase Two.
It takes a while to get yourself situated in Mell's life.
Firstly, Jace keeps a very close eye on you. For two weeks, he keeps you confined to your room. This was not all bad, however. Mell actually kept a very detailed diary, which is helpful for you to study up on the things in her life that you should know.
It's a surprisingly compelling read, truth be told. You would expect the daughter of a fisherman to lead a droll life, but Mell had some stories to tell. Stories of love, of betrayal, of loss. Her mother dies at a young age and it seems to have affected her greatly. But it is the stories of sex that catch your eye.
She was quite the terror, it seems. She has bedded many of the other girls in town. There is a particularly juicy tale about Mell convincing a trio of triplets to share her bed. Hmn, were those the girls you saw in the square? Something to look in on if you ever get bored, you suppose.
After a time, you manage to garner a bit of freedom. You approach and put on your best innocent act. You spew some nonsense about wanting to take back your life and not let the villains win. He eats it up, on the condition that you bring a knife with you whenever you leave and to never pass thru the bounds of the village.
Your first action is to find a courier and send for Neir. You give the fleet-foot an encoded letter and instructions to not open it. You won't know of his success until Neir finds you.
You spend your time waiting by exploring. You visit shops and stores of all kinds, crawl through back-alleys and rooftops and sometimes just sit in one place and study the mortals. It is quite different, watching such creatures not as prey but as equals.
One day, you steal some Gil from Jace and purchase a sword from the blacksmith. You have been keeping an eye on it for some time. The Blacksmith, Gen, claims that the blade was not of his design, that he simply found the thing when he open the shop years ago. A tall tale, you thought. But then you brought it home.
It's a well crafted blade fashioned from a blue metal that you have not seen the like of before. Around the end of the grip, you tie a red strip of cloth that Neir had given you before you set off. The sight of it helps remind you of your goal.
Something about the sword is strange to you. The quality of the blade, the tempre, It does not belong in a backwoods weapon shop, that much is certain.
Sometimes, when the nights are still, you think you can hear it humming.
A strange thing for you to encounter in this part of the world...
After your first month in Grant, something happens which sets the next part of your operation into motion.
As you, Yuna and Jace are sitting down for dinner, there is a commotion outside of your home. A clash of metal and the shouts of mortal men. Jace, a noble man who would never run away from trouble, grabs his sword and goes outside to check it out. He tells you two to stay inside, but you have no intention of following that order.
What do you do?
