Chapter 20 by joshman110 joshman110

Next.

You arrive at Mell's home.

The journey into Grant is mostly silent.

You and Jace, atop the back of the flightless bird, exchange few words. He mostly asks of your condition, are you alright, what did they do to you, etc, etc. You avoid these questions skillfully.
"Daddy, I don't want to talk about it. I just want to go home."
He stops asking after that.

As you ride through Grant, you take in the town. It's a small village, not much to look at. A butchers, a bakers, a tailors, all things a small town needs. Jace is greeted warmly by the passerby and the sight of you is apparently a welcome one. This girl was loved by her neighbors. Passing by the town square, a trio of comely young maidens wave and shout at you. They seem very happy to see you. You give them a small wave back and they giggle like school-girls.
Jace guides the bird toward the docks. The bird padding down the way, you glance out at the boundless expanse of the sea. Yet another thing you have never seen before. This world is so full of wonders, you can hardly believe it. It's a shame, then, that the mortals insist on making it so damn ugly. Something you intend on fixing.

Jace pulls up the reigns once you reach a house at the end of the dock. He steps off and leads the bird into a stable.
Suddenly, a girl holding a net rounds the corner.
"Oh my god!"
Startling you, you turn swiftly and move to adopt a combat stance but are surprised when the girl drops her net and sweeps you up into a big hug.
"MELLY!"
Her hug is so strong it lifts you off your feet. The two of you spin around for a second. Who is this girl? She bears a passing resemblance to you, so she must be related to Mell. But she is too young to be her mother. A sister, maybe?
She sets you down. She looks you up and down.
"Are you okay? Still got all of your fingers and toes? I've heard some nasty shit about slavers, Melly, but I never thought that-"
Jace stops her mid-sentence. "Breathe, Yuna. Give the girl some space."
"Yeah, yeah, dad." She says. Ah, so it is a sister.
"Ooh, gods, that is some shiner!" You wince and pull away as she lays a hand on your bruised eye.
"Ah! Yeah, well, I tried to get away and it didn't go so well..." You say.
"You're home now. That's what matters."

That night, Yuna cooks a hot meal for you and Jace. It consists mostly of fish.
Then they talk your ear off about the things in town that you missed during your 'capture.' They seem to be trying to not bring up the subject, instead act like you were just on a holiday. The stories contain names that you have never heard and places that you've never been and you have to smile and nod as though you had.
When the moon is high in the sky, they finally let you go. Outside of your room, Jace pulls you in for a hug of his own.
"I'm so glad your okay, My Blossom..." He says, barely holding back tears.
You say nothing and hug him back.
As you sit on the edge of your bed and eye the meager decorations of your new lodgings, a smile comes to your face. It was tricky, but you pulled it off.

Phase one is complete.
