As much as she loathed to admit it, it was true: All that the war against crime had done was make her grow more and more apathetic to her own cause, since it never seemed to end. She had tried to be a heroine even when it was becoming less and less legal for her to do so. That there were police officers now seeking to arrest her, and civilians thinking of her as every bit the menace as Fonzie, was making her want more and more to cast them all aside as no longer mattering to her.

Her smirk widening, Alfonso stood up from her chair and closed the distance between herself and Starslip. “I understand your plight more than you think, you know. You think I ALWAYS wanted to be a criminal? A mob boss? No. I tried working within the law, to earn a good future for myself and my parents. But, no matter what the world would have you believe, it doesn’t reward hard work, honesty, and good behaviour.”

The Malicious Mobster reached forward and held Cassie's chin in her hand, tilting her head back up to face her. The Violet Vision didn't phase out of her touch, but instead cooperated with this motion, looking into the mob boss’s eyes as she went on. “But it’s usually when we truly realize that fact of life that people like us tend to get the offer we so desperately need: The chance to be something more, to use the system to make ourselves better. Better than everyone around us. And all we have to do is let go of everything holding us back. To look the person in the eye and tell them ‘I want to be bad now’.”
