Chapter 8 by ElizaLariana ElizaLariana

Do I answer the phone?

Yes, with no delay

“Hello?” I ask in greeting. I'm hoping he doesn't hear the nervousness in my voice.

I'm shocked to hear Victor's voice on the other end. He greets me, “Good afternoon. May I speak to Charles?”

“I'm sorry, I think you have the wrong number,” I say, not knowing that Victor has appeared back in the foyer of his house.

“I don't have the wrong number,” Victor says in his voice, half in the phone and half in person. In my surprise, I drop the phone. Out of instinct, I back up, reversing into the closed front door. Victor hangs up the phone, which changes the screen on my phone, which is face up on the floor. “To be honest, the first time I saw you, I thought you looked like Charles. Maybe you were his sister or a relative. I stayed quiet, thinking it was coincidence. Then I saw the glove and noticed that it was too big for your hand. The final nail was the phone call.” As he spoke, he approached me slowly. When he got to my phone, he bent down to pick it up. Even if he managed to unlock it, he wouldn't find much that connected my male persona with the persona of Charlene. He stops a couple feet from where I have been cornered. “You want to tell me how Charles has become Charlene?”

What do I tell Victor?
