Chapter 25 by Zingiber Zingiber

Choose what to practice with Nadia and roll to resolve.

Work on talent: +CUNNING

"Eric, what do you think?" Nadia asks. "You up for some practice tonight?"

"Um, I'd be happy to," you say. "I'd rather make my mistakes here than in front of Ms. Sterling in Enchantments class."

Nadia laughs, but gently. "I very much agree," she says. "Let's find a practice room."

A Prefect directs you to a magical practice room. Modest magical damping usually prevents fumbled spells from getting away, and Beavertail always has someone on duty with a Suppression spell primed. You've heard the other Houses are not so diligent on this point.

You and Nadia tidy the space together, then leaf through your notes and texts to look for a good practice routine.

"Here's a set to start, and then these, maybe?" Nadia says.

"That looks good," you tell her. You add a couple of "stretcher" exercises to her stack.

Nadia goes through a set of the basic exercises. At your encouragement, she tries some bolder moves once she's warmed up, to some good effect. She pauses to admire her creation for a time. But she follows discipline and dismisses the elaborate enchantments she's put together.

"Top that," Nadia says with a smile.

You'll work your way up to Nadia's mark, and perhaps top her. But it's really a challenge for yourself. What are your current limits?

You take up your wand and start at the beginning.


Roll +CUNNING(+2) to resolve practicing the limits of your magical talent.

On a 10+, gain a new Spell and a CONSEQUENCE (magical backlash interferes with concentration). The Spell should be a useful enchantment.
On a 7-9, choose one:

  • You get insight into enchantments. Gain +1 Forward on your next Move, which should relate to Nadia, spell-casting, Enchantments class, magical research (e.g. ENCOUNTER Miss Caldwell the librarian), or Ms. Sterling.
  • Your wild talent overdoes things. Gain +1 XP. Describe how you fumble a near-complete enchantment with backlash on you or on Nadia. If it's you, take a CONSEQUENCE and GO TO THE INFIRMARY. If it's Nadia, take a CONSEQUENCE and roll an ENCOUNTER with her to make things right. If you Miss on the ENCOUNTER, choose either "Nadia becomes your ENEMY" or "You have to GET OUT OF TROUBLE."
  • On a Miss, your wild talent runs away with you. You, Nadia, and everyone within three doors' distance is stripped naked. Take a CONSEQUENCE and GET OUT OF TROUBLE.

Roll +CUNNING(+2) to practice your talents and narrate the results.
