Chapter 19 by Storm Chyld
How does Keira respond?
With a plan.
“What are your powers?” Keira asked quizzically.
“I guess I got a little wolf in me, faster, stronger, more agile, and I can grow a wicked set of claws.” Caleb grinned.
“Are you faster than Usain Bolt?” Keira asked.
“I don’t know, maybe.” Caleb shrugged.
“Well, he isn’t superhuman.” She pointed out.
“Dude doesn’t have claws.” Caleb countered.
“You don’t need claws to win Caleb, you need speed, agility, and skill. You’re not allowed to be superhuman, but you are allowed to be exceptional.” Keira rebuffed him, causing him to nod thoughtfully.
“What about you Beth, what do you do?”
“I blow shit up.” She growled annoyed.
“Then why are you holding back?” Keira asked. Beth opened her mouth to respond, but hesitated. “Because your dad said you have to act normal, but your powers aren’t in play, so play your best.” Keira turned to Josie. “Same for you right?”
“Uh no, I control the electricity in my body, my reflexes are superhuman.” Josie blushed.
“Can you tone them down, play at Calebs level, maybe a touch more, to make up for the skill gap?” Keira asked. Josie nodded thinking it over. “Landon was it? What do you do?”
“Um, I can fly.” He smiled bashfully.
“Wait seriously?” She asked astonished.
“Uh, yeah.” He nodded.
“That is so cool.” She smiled, causing him to blush. “Anything else?”
“I can create a kinetic field, which helps me withstand the flight, it also helps me resist impacts, and hit harder.” He shrugged.
“Can you do a controlled jump?” She asked.
“What do you mean?”
“Like, use just enough flight to add a foot two to your jump, something exceptional but not superhuman?” She clarified.
“Yeah, I can do that.” He nodded, getting her point.
“See, you guys got this. Go out there and be the exceptional people that you all know you are.” Keira put her pom poms out in front of them. Each one of them placed a hand over hers. “One, two, three,” She cued them up, before they all shouted, “go Stallions!”
The players rushed out onto the field, as the Timber Wolves came out to meet them. As the game picked up the Wolves were caught off guard, as the Stallions fought harder to gain back the ground they had lost. Caleb was quicker, Josie reacted faster, and at one point Landon caught an intentionally high throw, to score a touchdown. Even with their newfound resolve, and their slight advantages, there was a clear skill gap, as they started slowly catching up to the wolves.
Dana was clearly getting more frustrated and started body checking Beth with growing frequency. The coach continued to not call any kind of foul, which irritated Keira. As the clock wound down to the last few minutes of the game, the Stallions had one last play to try to tie the game and put it into overtime. Caleb tried to do a fake throw and run, but Tyler got through the line, and went straight for him. **** to pass it off to Beth, before the jock straight up tackled him. Beth ran for her life, as the others tried to run interference for her. Beth was just a few yards from the end zone, when Dana put on a burst of speed, and tackled her from behind, costing them the game.
The coach called the whistle, but instead of a foul, he announced the Wolves as the winners. Keira trotted onto the field, and put on a smile, proud of what they had accomplished even if she felt they had been robbed.
Dana smiled at Keira. “Why you cheering for the losers, you should be over here cheering for us.”
“First of all, you wish, and second of all, they did a great job.” Keira smiled back, though it didn’t reach her eyes.
“Speaking of jobs. Where’s your father Beth?” Dana asked cruelly.
“He’s busy.” She growled.
“Weird, my father is a dentist, and he managed to be here.” Dana grinned twisting the verbal knife.
Beth started forward but Josie grabbed her and held her back. With her lover’s hands full, it was Keira who stalked toward Dana. “Back off.” She growled, low.
“Or what, bitch?” Dana smirked.
