Chapter 3 by doppledon doppledon

What's next?

Try to save it?

Your heart drops into your stomach as you realize what it is you've just done. Drakes have been hunted for centuries and as a result there are so few left that for all you know this is the last one. Your greed ruled your decision making you realize and now you couldn't follow through with your actions. You had to do something, but you didn't know what. Your medical skills are limited at best, and somehow you doubted wrapping some cloth around a severed spine would make any difference. What could you do though?

Then you remembered what you bought for the occasions when you were on your own and injured. Healing potions. You had three left and didn't know if they would work on a Drake or not, but you had to try. As you went to your pack you tossed aside before the fight a part of yourself kind of hoped they wouldn't work and you'd be **** to put the creature out of its misery so you could get the valuable resources. The thought annoyed you that it even existed at this moment, but you'd have to deal with your greed later. For now you opened your pack in search of the three vials. You chuckled lightly at the irony of this moment. Here you were about to use a rather expensive resource because you got greedy and wanted to line your pockets a bit more by destroying the life of a rare creature. You find yourself more poor than when you started. "A fitting chastisement" you say out loud to yourself.

Finding the three vials you had wrapped in cloth to protect the fragile glass you turn back to the Drake to find that it is now watching you with its golden eyes that seemed to be glowing slightly brighter. Maybe it was the darkness creeping in now that night was beginning to descend. You slowly approach the beast with your arms raised and slightly jiggle the vials as if to show your intentions were pure. The Drake's head tracks your movements and you can see its eyes bouncing from your face, to the vials, and finally to your sheathed sword. When you get too close for its comfort its eyes are solely focused on your sheathed sword and it starts to emit a low rumbling growl.

Understanding its concern you unsheathe your sword startling the creature a bit, but you quickly toss your sword back by your pack. The Drake immediately stops its growl, and for a brief moment you almost see surprise in its features. Just as suddenly though the surprise is gone and its eyes jump between your face and the vials again.

"Ok, I know you don't have much reason to trust me big guy", which earns a snort from the Drake, "and I don't know if these will work on you or if you can even understand me, but what is in these vials might heal you and get you back on your feet. Now I'm going to pour two of them into your wound and if possible I'd like you to drink the last one", you pause, "Do you understand at all that I am not trying to cause you anymore harm?" All that happens is the Drake lays its big head down and lets out a gravely grunt.

"I'll take that as a maybe then shall I big guy", to which the Drake lifts its head up right near your face and lets out an even louder snort then before. Blowing your hair around a little, before lowering its head back down to the ground. You wonder if you said something weird to earn such a response, but put it out of your mind as more pressing matters demand your attention. You notice it still has its eyes on you and they are definitely glowing more brightly than before. You had never read anything about their eyes glowing, but again, more pressing matters.

As you approached its rear it lifted its head again to to see what you were about to do. You examined the wound. A clean cut from your enchanted blade and the blood was still flowing.

"Well for what I'm about to do it is good the wound is still bleeding, otherwise we'd have to reopen it in order for the liquid to fully get inside", you stated out loud as much for yourself as for letting the Drake know. You uncork one of the vials and begin to tilt it over the wound.

"I don't know how this will feel", you warn while pausing your pour, "for humans it is a mixture of pain and pleasure as the wound knits itself back together, but afterwards it'll feel a bit numb for a week or so. Well, bottoms up", you quip as you upend the vial over the wound and the liquid pours out onto the wound.

Does it work?
