Chapter 84
by TwilitDesires
It was with a feeling of utter stupidity that Ahsch transferred from the nothingness of to being caught by warm, trembling hands as he was born for the third time.
Thrice Reincarnated
For his third reincarnation, Ahsch was rather proud that he didn't cry.
He wasn't sure if it was the significantly greater concentration of Mana in his body, or the bit of divinity attached to his soul, or just 'getting used to it,' but unlike his first time being born on Euphoria, the hrafthi had a good deal of control over his reactions. A vague thought about synapses and the lack thereof in a baby's brain crossed his mind, but he filed any questions on physical possibility under 'magic is bullshit' and left it at that.
Magical shenanigans aside, the most remarkable thing about this reincarnation was that it was Avery who was apparently midwifing. It was her trembling hands that tenderly, almost hesitantly swaddled him, and her eyes that stared at him with... timid worry? His Magnitude was much higher than the last time he was (re)born, but he still couldn't use magic, so Heart Sight - whether via Threefold Senses or not - wasn't an option.
"Ahsch?"
Despite his best efforts, words were also out of the equation, as his garbled attempts proved. Nodding too, since those muscles had never been used. He tried blinking a lot.
"My Lord, I don't think a 'born three minutes ago' infant would be capable of speech, regardless of the intelligence they may have reincarnated with," came Butler's amused monotone.
Ahsch was disgusted by the raspberry-like laugh that he let out.
"I'm sure... it's Ahsch," Ariin said from behind, in between pants. "Now... give him here before I get up and take him from you."
"It's him," Rwnil said from some corner of the room as Avery obeyed the new mother. "That you would doubt my work is almost insulting."
Avery glared over once Ahsch had been handed off. "Look, reincarnation on its own is absurd. Controlling it like you claim to do..." she shook her head.
"She didn't control it," Ariin said, shifting her newborn brother around and baring a nipple to him, which he instinctively latched onto and began to drink from. "She... guided it. Just bound it back where we wanted it."
"Still a fucking miracle," the royal muttered, her hands fidgeting for a minute before she stuffed them in her pockets.
"Proof will come soon enough," Ariin soothed, gently stroking Ahsch's head. "If what our parents said was true, he'll probably bond with Mahat again before the day is out."
Avery grunted. "You couldn't have bonded Mahat to stay here?"
"Interfering with an active familiar bond is quite different than tethering a pre-existing reincarnation back here."
"So you can't do it?"
"Watch your tongue, shaid."
Avery snickered, but didn't goad the ascendant further, and Ahsch was already starting to get sleepy. Being a baby sucks, he grumbled to himself as he yawned, and heard Butler crossing the room to the door and speak to someone outside, then more footsteps coming in.
He drifted off before anyone could say anything further.
The muted shadowscape of colors and warped, abstract shapes felt oddly familiar to him. Which, while odd in that he had only ever been there once before, wasn't quite so strange when he considered that a part of him that had been beside him for over 18 years came from this place.
The motes of twisting light, dancing and capering, lumbering, soaring, scuttling, leaping, slinking, or darting, were all there as well. But Ahsch didn't need them all. He only needed one.
Mahat
The silver-and-black mote was already almost to him when his choice reverberated through the shadowscape, joy leaping in their hearts as his familiar reunited with him. He wasn't sure how long they stayed there, rejoicing.
Ahsch awoke to frantic licks from a wet tongue, and burbled in laughter again at Mahat's excitement. Loud conversation surrounded him, including Dorin and Elui's voices, as everyone reacted to Mahat's appearance. After a few moments, the greater spined fox transformed into her monster form, a happy grin on her face as she looked around and began to talk with the others.
Looking around, Ahsch was amused to see a rather bored Rwnil standing in one corner, but his thoughts ground to a halt when he spotted someone else in another corner, eyes fixed on him with a complicated mix of emotions that he wished he had Heart Sight to parse through.
Kirasiel was there, hugging herself, looking lost, and relieved, and guilty.

Strange Salvation
(Re)Starting Life as a Weird Mage
The vast majority of people fall almost completely and utterly within the average. Maybe they're notably more intelligent, or stronger than the average, getting outside the standard deviation or two that most of the population lies within. So, what happens if after - or, perhaps, during - , someone found out they were actually exceptional? And, even better, got a second chance? <[(I'm not including it as a primary tag because the usual (sexual/fetishistic) connotations don't apply, but there will be 'gender-bender' in this story, that being actual transgender/transsexual characters who undergo physical transition, both MtF and FtM. The main character does not, and is male throughout the entire story. Along with that, there's some general exploration of sex and gender and sexuality - I approach that sort of thing with an eye to realism in general. If you don't like that, don't read. If you think you won't mind it and end up not, don't complain.)]>
