Chapter 25 by unseenunheard
What's next?
Things seem odd the next morning
All in all the vamps spread their number the past two nights, but no human who saw this activity escaped to warn others. The Invasion was still a secret so far. All told roughly one out of every forty citizens of the town had succumbed to the darkness. As the bright sun sent the bloodsuckers scurrying for shelter most of the unsuspecting townsfolk began their normal business for the day.
One of the more prominent of those townsfolk was Mayor Dana Wittier. The town was considered small enough to run itself, but anyone who has ever dealt with local politics knows the value of keeping sticky fingers out of the government's coffers. This no-nonsense approach, combined with a willingness to listen, and a disarming smile made the attractive 45-year-old quite popular with a large portion of the voters. Dana lived close enough to city hall that she walked to work each morning. As she did so this day she made her usual trip to the bakery she greeted the people milling about in different directions. The town square seemed a bit sparse for a Friday. On the opposite end of the crowdedness scale was the bakery. The line waiting for their bagels and doughnuts was much longer than normal. When the owner took Dana's order he apologized noting that two of the three employees for the morning rush had called out.
She managed to make it into her office just before the start of the day. Her assistant had already been there for some time and let the mayor know the two points of news: One, the finance officer cancelled the planned meeting as he was out sick. Two, Carter Shipbottom was found dead outside his home, with his body torn to shreds by animals. The assistant told her about all the known facts about the Shipbottom attack. how he'd last been seen leaving an auction earlier that evening. But it was the first piece of news that intrigued The financial officer, Roger, was notorious for coming in even when just shy of pneumonia. If he was sick he didn't look it the day before. Dana decided to make a few phone calls.
For a majority of the vampires they were resting for the night before. There were some newly turned who had only been turned an hour or two before sunrise. They didn't dare step outside, but they were hungry and needed to work around that to feed. For example, Henry was working installing solar panels on a client's roof when his cell rung. He recognized the ring tone was for his girlfriend.
"Hey"
"Henry, can you cut out early?"
"Not really, you all right? You sound funny."
"I'm... sick. Could you come over with some... lunch?"
Henry was torn, "I'd love to, but it's just me Lonnie."
His girlfriend's voice changed noticeably, somehow both emphasizing how sick she was but also that she was taking charge. "Do you really want me to suffer with nothing to do but think about *all* the things I do for you? Or would you rather I am able to tell all my girlfriends what a great guy you are and how... grateful... I'd be?"
Henry laughed. A threat on its own might not have been enough. A bribe, the same. But a threat and a bribe together? He had ****. "I'll have to owe Lonnie a favor but I'll there. What do you want for lunch?"
"It doesn't matter what you bring. Just come."
Thirty minutes later Henry arrived at his girlfriend's place. He saw his girlfriend's roommate's car in the parking lot, and hoped she was anywhere else.
"Knock knock," he said opening the front door without knocking. He was carrying a brown bag with a salad and deli soup.
"CLOSE THE DOOR!" his girlfriend shouted from another room.
He quickly did that and the sunlight in the room was halved. "Where are you?"
"In here," she said vaguely.
He stepped into the hallway, The bathroom door was open showing no one inside. Her bedroom door was open and it was surprisingly dark in there. Walking into the bedroom he could barely make out that blankets were hung over the two windows. There was an unshapely silhouette in the room. His girlfriend's voice came from it, "Just what the doctor ordered."
Henry reached out to turn on the lamp, but his girlfriend put a halt to that. "NO!" she said sharply, then with all sweetness she said, "Take your pants off"
The roofer wasn't against a little afternoon delight, so he obliged her. Sitting on the floor with his pants down between his legs he froze when he heard a noise that wasn't his girlfriend. He fumbled through the pocket of his bunched up pants for his phone. He flicked it on and used the light to get a first good look at what was going on in the room with him. The cell phone light shone on his girlfriend. She had a menacing grin surrounded by blood and with prominent fangs. Then she peered over to his right where the gurgling noise was still going. Scared he methodically moved his arm holding his phone to his right. There was the roommate twitching on the floor, her eyes unblinking staring at the ceiling, and with blood coating her neck. Shocked, Henry dropped the phone. It fell face up breaking up the room's darkness in a small area. His girlfriend crawled next to him and gave him a lustful but not a loving kiss. She tasted his fear on her lips and went in for the kill on his neck. As she sucked away the roommate got to her knees and bent forward to suck at his inner thigh.
With more people disappearing will anyone suspect trouble before it's too late?
