They manage to slip past undetected

Lux sizes up the opposition ahead. They don’t look particularly dangerous, but a similar assumption was what got her into this whole mess. Even with her magic restored, she decides a direct attack would be foolish.

“Follow me,” she whispers to Eron, motioning him to keep his head down. Using the scattered furniture and other items as cover, they move carefully around the edge of the room, staying out of sight as much as possible.

Suddenly, one of the outcasts looks up – did they hear something? Lux grabs Eron and pulls him down as low as she can, behind the cover of an overturned table they’re passing.

There’s barely room, but the two of them are able to squeeze just out of sight. Lux is left half-sitting, half-lying, with Eron on top of her. She can’t see his face, but his chest is pressed tightly against hers – she can feel his heart pounding.

Hers is doing the same, and it’s not just adrenaline. One of Eron’s hands is holding her hip, squeezing it, and she realises that she is also holding him tighter than necessary. A strange and almost frightening thrill of excitement runs through her – she has to bite her lip to keep herself from making any involuntary sound. Why now, of all times, would she be feeling like this…?

Craning her neck, she manages to get a view of the outcasts. They seem on edge, but are they alert – aware that someone is here? She can’t tell. Nothing to do but lie still and stay very, very quiet. And to fight down the heat that insistently builds inside…

Finally, mercifully, Lux hears the sound of footsteps, and sees the group of outcasts begin to move away through the door she and Eron came in by. Once the coast is definitely clear, she pries herself free of Eron’s grip, and they prepare to move on.
