Chapter 18

Suddenly... What?
There's a Knock on the Door
Mina almost leapt from her skin at the resonate knocks. She let out a reflexive 'Wee-oink' before she could stop herself.
Watching her face go from pink to fuchsia to bright-tomato-red, Mina sharply rose from her chair, snapping her gaze away from the mirror in awkward humiliation.
In an attempt to flush that embarrassment from her mind, her attention was next solely focused on the door to her dorm and who may have been the culprit behind those knocks.
Hurriedly reaching for the door, she halted, grasping the handle with nervous hands.
"W-who is it?" she asked, feeling a foreboding sense of unease wash over her.
She was concerned because - whomever this mystery knocker was - they had decided to knock instead of barging right on in.
Afterall, it was perfectly acceptable for a friend or a classmate to enter a girl's room, without needing permission. Of course it was; they were all friends. That had been another reason why Mina changed her mind about the girl's dorms not having lockable doors. It just made it all the easier for her classmates to intrude whenever they wanted, without having to find creative workarounds. Mina loved that her privacy could breached at any time now.
However, back to the knocker, Mina reasoned that, whoever it was, they may not be one of 1A and no friend of hers. Just that thought alone made her stomach sink.
'What if it is the pervert responsible for all this?' her mind whispered to her.
As much as she'd want to know who to blame, she was not ready at all for a real confrontation with them yet.
She didn't even know how his quirk worked, if it was indeed a quirk at all. All she had gathered was that it required writing a change down, based on the notes. However, that was it. Even then, that could have been an intentional misdirection. At the end of the day (literally), she didn't know a thing about the pervert nor his power. That acknowledgement caused her to shiver.
Hearing no answer, she checked the doors peephole. She saw no-one.
Working up the courage, she quickly shifted the door open and readied herself into a fighting stance. She could still hold her own, if a confrontation went down. Enough to defend herself and run away to get help from the others. They should have still all be downstairs, Mina assumed.
Fortunately, Mina was met with a completely barren hallway. Innocent feeling as ever. No alterations or changes. Normal.
A dingdong ditcher? Really?
No, there had to be something else. Mina stepped out and studied her environment with **** diligence. It wasn't until she looked back to her door and noticed, with enormous anxiety, that a folded up piece of paper had been stuck to its outside face.
"Oh no," Mina whined pleadingly, begging that what she saw was an illusion or anything other than what she thought it was.
It was another note. Another description of how her reality had been changed. One more reminder gloatingly hanged right off her door for her to find.
Mina felt her fury rise. She grabbed the folded up note and held the offensive piece of paper out in front of her. With a red face and white knuckles, she made to tear it into ribbons.
But she didn't... She wanted to and she totally would have, but she found herself unable to follow through.
A thought entered her mind: 'I shouldn't destroy it before reading it first.'
No! Mina didn't care what it said. She was sick of this pervert and his stupid game. She wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of... of...
'What if it is a really good change, though?' Mina thought, 'Haven't all the notes I've found been the good ones?'
She found her mettle soften slightly. That was true. All of the notes that have been left for her to find have only been the good changes. The ones she'd forgive. THE ONES SHE'D NEVER WANT TO CHANGE BACK, EVEN IF SHE COULD. For all she knew, the Pervert may have been deliberately leaving only the good changes out for her to find. Maybe it was a way to justify his actions. To demonstrate that he's not all bad. He can be noble and just. What if this was another one of those good ones?
'B-but what would it matter, if it were?' Mina reasoned, 'It's just a note. Why shouldn't I destroy it?'
As sensible as that line of questioning had seemed to Mina, it - in retrospect - felt weak. Almost silly. Not to be listened to.
However, the next thought seemed perfectly reasonable:
'It would be stupid for me to destroy any of the notes. They may be important pieces of evidence. I might also be able to use the notes to convince the girls that something is wrong.'
'It only makes sense that I read the notes, too, as that'll give me the best understanding of what has changed. Knowing what is different will be the first step in knowing how to combat it.'
'Yes... yes, that's right,' Mina realised as she released her dangerous grip on the note and held it more gently.
She had to read it, to know what she was dealing with. It may have been something she hadn't discovered yet, like Ochako's Laser Beam Obsession had been. Tearing it up was nonsensical and purely emotion-based. She had just been mad but luckily, her mind had stopped her before she did anything she may have regretted.
Still, Mina felt trepidation as she slowly unfolded the letter to read its contents.
She gasped!
What does the note say? Anything we've seen before or something completely new?
