Chapter 53

What's the challenge?
The twitter challenge blows things up
The group of islanders was once again herded to the event stage, where the next challenge would take place. Paige was dragged “kicking and screaming” to it by the production team and trailed behind, being the last to arrive. Paige looks away as you observe her, her eyes red and mascara streaking down her cheeks.
It’ll take time. You need time. Paige will forgive you. That was what you hoped, at least.
The group forms into your pairing couples. You stand beside Paige with some distance between you. Paige didn’t want to look at you or acknowledge you. The other teams for the challenge were Rachel and Mike, Liz and Rick and Tom and Jenna.
Teams would take turns guessing which person or persons were mentioned on tweets from fans picked out by the producers. The production team brought out huge cardboard cutouts of “tweets” selected from fans and hide names of the contestants who are involved in the tweets.
Mona, being uncoupled, was the volunteer host for the event.
You grip your phone, hoping a helper would come up and help you somehow in this challenge.
The first tweet was read, and the game began.
“Okay, guys. Time to read the first tweet.” Mona says.
Mona unveils the tweet, which covered the names of the contestants that were mention. Mona starts.
“Our first tweet comes from user @SailorOfMyVessel and they say that..."
@SailorOfMyVessel
I think BLANK and BLANK make the perfect couple! #BalconyBuddies
Rachel and Mike were first to guess. Mike speaks up, saying, “I think Mike and Rachel make the perfect couple?”
“Wrong. Good try though guys,” Mona says and Mike and Rachel both laugh at their self-interested answer and shrug it off.
Liz and Rick guess next, “Liz and Rick?”
Mona makes an X with her hands and says, “Nuh-uh. Wrong again. How about you guys Jenna and Tom?”
Jenna speaks up immediately, “Paige and Matt.”
“NOPE. Very close, though Jenna.” Mona says delightfully.
When it came down to you, Paige immediately speaks up and answers in a somber tone, “Jenna and Matt.”
“Ding ding. That’s a bingo Paigey. The correct answer is Matt and Jenna. One point to Team Four.” Mona chirps.
Mona promptly removes the slots covering the names and revealed the full tweet.
@SailorOfMyVessel
I think Matt and Jenna make the perfect couple! #BalconyBuddies
What the fuck do people on twitter know anyways? Well… sure you thought you and Jenna would be a great couple, but WHY are they picking these right now of all things. The producer's heavy hand was guiding this and making your situation a lot worse.
The other couples all looked uncomfortably at each other, and you try to hide your face. Paige has a sorrowful look like she expected the answer and was sinking into a black hole of anger and despair. Jenna shows great concern for you and Paige, like a child watching two parents get into a heated argument.
Great. The first challenges were in your favor, but it seems like the producers were going to fuck things over for you now. Your phone and AMA remains silent.
“Okay, on to the next tweet. Let's reveal our next tweet…”
@slifer24680
BLANK acts like such a nice guy, but I wonder if everyone in the villa knows that he took BLANK to the infamous bathroom. #Scandalous #PlayersGoingToPlay
Oh, fucking hell!
Liz answers and then look at you with a stain of guilt and says, “Matt and Mona?”
“Correct, Liz. Wow, how did you guess that so quickly?” Mona asks, still looking innocent.
Liz shrugs and looks at you, and then away in second-hand embarrassment. You can see Paige clenching her fist and gritting her teeth, steam practically coming out of her ears. Jenna was wincing and then turns her head away too, feeling bad for you. You feel like shrinking up and dying. Cameras were all pointing towards you.
“That’s one point Team Two and one point Team Four,” Mona says, not even bothering to acknowledge how awkward things had gotten between everyone. Well, mostly between everyone and you.
“Okay... let’s move on shall we? Next tweet!"
@Octavia626
BLANK is only with BLANK to get to the final. She doesn’t really like him. She is totally playing the game and only in it for the followers and money. #FakeAF #TeamBalconyBuddies
“Jenna and Tom. Guesses?” Mona asks.
“Whoa. I’m really sorry about this… but…” Tom grimaces and looks over at your team and Jenna tugs on his arm trying to get him to stop, “Paige and Matt?”
“Ding ding!” Mona says and reveals the full tweet. “Correct Tommyboy.”
@Octavia626
Paige is only with Matt to get to the final. She doesn’t really like him. She is totally playing the game and only in it for the followers. #FakeAF #TeamBalconyBuddies
Looking over, Paige looks like she was boiling. She closes her eyes and lets out a deep breath like she was practicing breathing exercises. From your AMA you knew that person had no idea what the fuck they were talking about. Paige did really like you and it looks this challenge was getting to her. You feel yourself getting sick. They obviously wanted drama from you. You try and bear it and get through without giving them any satisfaction.
“Next tweet,” Mona unveiled the next tweet, and panic flashed in her eyes. “Ummm…”
A long silence followed this, and then you can see Mona swallow and reveal the tweet:
@KingOfMints
BLANK is a thief who stole a necklace from my pawn shop! I have footage of her stealing it! youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ
The contestants all took turns guessing random Islanders. All of them looked around and wondered who it could be. The first guesses were directed towards the now sketchy and poor store clerk. You knew the answer, of course, but didn’t want to flat out spill it.
A thought occurred to you, hitting you like a bullet between your eyes. This was bad. This was really bad. Sure, it was nice seeing Mona stricken like she was. But now, you might lose all your leverage over her. This was the worst possible scenario.
“I think that’s enough, guessing. I guess we can just forget this one,” Mona says. An assistant producer stops Mona from moving onto the next tweet and tells her to reveal it.
Mona makes a face like she was told she just had cancer and removes the sliding tile covering the name, and it reveals her own name. The other Islanders promptly breaks into gossip after this, wondering if it could be true. All you could do is watch Mona struggle to compose herself and then stare directly at you. Her eyes were full of blame and hate.
What did she want from you? You had NOTHING to do with it. But you were certainly going to pay for it by the looks of it.
The rest of the twitter challenge wasn’t as eventful or juicy and was mostly supportive things like, Mike is so cool and Liz made the right choice!. When it was done, there was a somber celebration over the winning couple, Liz and Rick. The islanders were all directed to go back to the villa after it was done, and you immediately went to talk to Paige.
“Paige, can we talk?”
“We have nothing to talk about,” Paige answers, not looking at you.
15:39 – Paige’s affection has decreased by 5 – Paige doesn’t think she knows you anymore
15:39 – Mike, Rick, Liz, Tom, Rachel’s affection has decreased by 5 – You seemed like a nice guy at first but now seem a bit scummy
The Twitter Challenge just completely fucked up your plans, and now you were going back to a house with Paige completely angry at you, Mona unleashed and your friends unable to trust you.
Can you turn this thing around?
What happens when you return to the villa?
