Chapter 18

The ring speaks
I hugged my sister tightly as we said our goodbyes. "Have a safe trip," I told her, trying to sound cheerful.
"Thanks," she replied, smiling. "I'll make sure to keep in touch, alright?"
As she left for the airport, I couldn't help but feel a sense of emptiness in the apartment. We had grown so close over the past few days, and I hated the thought of losing that connection.
Suddenly, I heard a voice in my head. It was the ring, speaking to me for the first time. "You're such a coward," it said disdainfully. "You've barely used my power at all. And you feel guilty for using it? Pathetic."
The ring's voice echoed in my head, persistent and demanding. I couldn't help but argue back, trying to defend myself against its accusations.
"I've been careful," I said, my thoughts a jumbled mix of frustration and fear. "I didn't want to cause harm or manipulate people against their will."
The ring scoffed at my response. "Careful? That's just another word for cowardice. You've barely scratched the surface of my power, and you're already overwhelmed with guilt? How can you hope to achieve anything if you're constantly second-guessing yourself?"
I clenched my fists, determined to stand my ground. "Using your power has consequences. I don't want to hurt anyone or make decisions for them that they wouldn't make themselves."
The ring's voice turned cold and calculating. "Ah, but don't you see? People make poor decisions all the time. They're guided by their emotions, their biases, and their ignorance. My power allows you to rise above all that, to make better choices for them than they could ever make on their own."
I shook my head, unwilling to accept the ring's twisted logic. "That's not for me to decide. People have the right to make their own choices, even if they're flawed. I can't just take that away from them."
The ring laughed mockingly. "And yet, you've already done so with Grace. You used my power to ensure she'd be honest with you, didn't you? If you truly believed in people's right to choose, you wouldn't have done that."
I felt a wave of guilt wash over me as the ring's words hit home. It was right; I had used its power on my sister, even though I knew it was wrong. But that didn't mean I had to keep using it, did it?
"I made a mistake," I admitted, my voice barely a whisper. "But that doesn't mean I can't change. I won't let your power control me."
The ring's voice turned ominous. "You may think you have a choice now, but soon, you'll realize that you can't resist me. My power is intoxicating, and you'll find yourself craving it, needing it. And when that happens, I'll be here, waiting."
As the ring's words echoed in my mind, I felt a chill run down my spine. Its confidence was unsettling, and I couldn't help but wonder if it was right.
