Chapter 3 by Gatsha Gatsha

Choose a challenger to continue.

The heroic Gaia Daughter and villainous Fishfreak.

On a certain dimension's earth, the island of Japan faced a peril that was difficult to describe. From the ocean, a wave of monstrous fish could be seen approaching: lanternfish with arms and legs; moray eels as large as buses; jellyfish which floated into the air and which crackled with strange light like miniature thunderheads; hammerhead sharks with that were also big, also had arms and legs, and also occasionally also floated into the air; that sort of thing. The most notable among them, however, was the enormous shape of a woman, the size of a two-story building. She appeared to have a voluptuous figure, but that was certainly the least notable aspect of her body: blue-skinned and covered in all manner of seaweed, barnacles, starfish, and even ship wreckage, she was a terrifying sight even before ones eyes inevitably traveled to the head. There, an enormous jelly-fish like creature took up residence on the top half of her head, where two slightly-displacing yellow eyes shimmered from the gelatinous surface and tendrils hung like a facsimile of hair all around. On the lower half, her otherwise attractive womanly face was split into a grin with row upon row of dagger-like teeth like a shark, her frog-like tongue hid at the back of her mouth.

She spoke in a booming voice, loud enough to address every Japanese citizen at once. Her voice seemed impossible, like a chorus of different aquatic and amphibious animals joining together to somehow form a passable approximation of human vocal chords. "Now, huMANS, prepare to REAP the conSEQuences of your MALignance and INDifferENCE towards the ocean you have BEEN BLESSED with. When I first aROSE and gathered like the MIGHTY MANOWAR, your govERNments denied my exisTENCE. When I began to CONQUER your isLANDS, your MEDia dubbed me FIIISHFREEEAK. At no point was there an ATTEMPT to RECKON with YOUR SIN. Now, your SIN RECKONS with YOU. We will TAKE your cities. We will LEARN how your CHILDren taste FLASH FRIED!!"

The scene on the ground was panic, as every citizen of the nation attempted to travel by foot or by vehicle as far inland as possible. They could hardly be blamed: they'd seen jets knocked from the sky by monstrous jellyfish or the tail of a giant whale, and they'd seen tanks on the beaches erupt into flames as they were torn apart by the impossibly powerful teeth of shark-men, or disappear into the gullets of enormous frogs.

In a situation like this, there was only one person who could fight for the island and its people... One person who now stood in the street, watching the advancing tide of horror and staring straight into the eyes of their leader. A single woman, with long, shimmering dark hair, looking like a traditional, slender Japanese beauty somewhere between twenty and thirty, dressed in a white sun hat and conservative purple sundress billowing in the stormy winds. She wore dark shades that hid her cool grey eyes and sandals that might be perfect for enjoying the beach on a different sort of day. Her face wore a calm frown with minimal makeup; she had supernaturally clear and fair skin and a distinguishing birthmark below the right side of her lips, and hardly seemed to need any help.

Nobody knew this woman. When disaster broke out across the world (but, strangely, mostly in Japan), several reporters corroborated her presence on the scene, but none of them had ever managed to track her down for questioning. If they could, they would find she had no life. They might find she wasn't what was traditionally considered human, as she lay dormant in a chamber beneath the earth until she was needed, updating her appearance only as the era required.

She sighed, watching the destruction. "Mother Earth... Is now the time? The humans have sinned, but now, they have suffered. I believe they have heard the sea's grievances, but if they are pushed any further, they may not be capable of recovering. Is now the time for us to save your children?"

There was no verbal response... but the woman's gray eyes began to flash with light, which filled them until they were entirely white. "I hear you, Mother Earth. Your child understands. Now, RISE - GAIA DAUGHTER!!"

The woman crossed her arms in an "X" and ran towards the danger, surely appearing mad to any onlookers... and then, impossibly, she leapt several stories into the air, her form becoming enveloped in light. She needed to get high enough to make proper room for her legs.

The light began to grow... soon, there was an enormous, statuesque figure of a woman on the beach, a slender woman made of light and growing, growing... she was first two stories, the same as Fishfreak, before she became four, then six... Soon, she was half the height of a skyscraper, dwarfing the wave of tidal monsters. "Gaia Daughter has risen," a voice boomed from the figure, loud enough to make some humans take shelter.

Gaia Daughter only became as large as she needed to for any given task, as determined by the whims of Mother Earth. In this case, that was very very large, the largest she had ever been. Slowly, her true form emerged from the light, with shimmering silver skin, long dark hair which passed through a golden, human-formed mask that seemed to fixed to her without any bindings, and which contained an opening from cheek to cheek to reveal lips that did not move as she spoke. Bright lights shined from within the mask, her heavy-lidded eyes. Her silver body seemed fully humanoid, and was clad in what looked like a conservative dark red one-piece swimsuit with a gold mantle bearing strange engraved talismans. "Daughter of the sea, halt your attack. Mother Earth has heard your cries and wishes to answer your prayers. She will not, however, tolerate further **** towards her children. She is willing to work with you in good faith to hear your grievances."

Fishfreak made a cacophonous croaking noise that sounded offended, but was evidently the call for her monsters to pause their **** as all yielded to her. "The sins of EARTH'S CHILDren will be answered WITH blood. Our fuRY canNOT be QUELLED with less. When this ISLAND nation is our KINGdom, a KINGdom of CRUNCHY BONES, we will discuss with EARTH'S REMaining governMENTS how they might LIVE under our protECTION, in SERVitude."

"That cost is too great. Your ambition is itself a sin, daughter of the sea. Now, for the protection of your brethren, you shall retreat. There shall not be another warning."

"Every DENizen of the DEEP ARmy is prepared to DIE for OUR CAUSE. Servant of the CURsed Earth, become a SACrifICE for my HUNGering HOARD!!" The time for dialogue appeared to be over as a literal tidal wave of oceanic horrors rose to meet Gaia Daughter, the lone protector of Earth.

"The blood of your brethren is on your hands now, daughter of the sea. If you truly represent the will of the ocean, why do all sea creatures not follow you? Why does the water itself not bend to your will? Your grievance is not the will of a part of earth, but the complaint of a small portion of its life." With that as the only warning, Gaia Daughter, now covered in Fishfreak's minions, leapt into the air with a boom. Gracefully, in a way that was hard to imagine for a creature her size, she began spinning in the air like a top, flinging fish high into the air before slowing in a bizarre pose, her two legs bowed and her hands extended palm-out. "Gaia Lightning Punisher!!" her voice boomed, as brilliant, crackling rays of light shot from the eyes of her mask, eviscerating every enemy that had clung to her a moment ago and easily destroying half of the aquatic forces.

"BASTARD," Fishfreak croaked. "The DIRT and WORMS of Earth are NOTHING comPARED to its SEA!! Prepare to FACE OUR WRATH." Declaring war, the monster grinned confidently in the face of a woman many times her size. Then, a wet, squishing assortment of creatures began to cling to her. It wasn't just lifeforms; coral, wet clumps of mud, and even human debris of the ocean clung to her, as though picking a side in the war. Before long, Fishfreak was nearly the size of her opponent, a form that could hardly be described as womanly as every inch of her many miles was covered in sea life. "DIIIE, GAIAAA DAUUGHTEER!!!" The individual fish coalesced into something like a shark's head above the neck as the huge form lumbered forward, rows upon rows of sharpened objects forming an overqualified maw of teeth to rip apart the defender of earth.

Gaia Daughter was more than capable of hand-to-hand combat, but she rarely ever needed to use it. Indeed, she was not summoned as a fighter, but as a tool of judgment. For her to have ever been defeated would mean the defeat of earth itself. She had landed on the beach again, raising an enormous cloud of sand which she gracefully wafted away from the people she was sworn to protect with a sweep of her arm. She wasn't going to let Fishfreak get anywhere close to her with that mouth. "Reflect on your sins in the next world. Gaia Skyquake BIIIG PUNISHEEER!!!" she shouted, stepping forward to plant her right foot and kneel while bending her arms to place saluting hands to the sides of her eyes. There was a sound like a sonic boom as energy gathered in her eyes, which became as blinding as a sun...

A ray of pure white cut through the sky as Gaia Daughter started with the top of Fishfreak's head, methodically turning her gaze down to reduce the fish monster to ashes. She continued mercilessly even after the creature was no more than a pair of legs, moving her gaze downward until the sea began to bubble with the scent of flash-fried seafood.

Sighing, the woman stood straight again and shrank in size. Without their leader, the creatures of the ocean would disperse. Once again, the servant of the earth prepared to sleep until she was needed...

... But, strangely, she didn't feel sleepy. That meant her work wasn't done.

Fishfreak had demonstrated an ability to transfer her consciousness to link many sea creatures at once. Was it possible... what Gaia Daughter had destroyed was not the actual brain center? Fishfreak might have escaped to plot her ****...

Sure enough, the human-sized and fair-skinned heroine, now once again in her conservatively-dressed disguise, felt Mother Earth call her attention to a far-off point on the horizon. As she peered closely, she witnessed a straggling horde of small sea creatures leaping into what looked like a gash in the air... One of them, conspicuously, was a large jellyfish with something like the back of a woman's head below. It was easy to imagine she was planning to regrow her body and form a new army.

Gaia Daughter wouldn't miss her chance. She leapt from the beach and shot through the air with a serene expression, entering the portal just before it closed, not knowing where she would end up or if she would arrive there at the same time as her enemy.

Indeed, she was entering another world, one where the protections of her Mother Earth might not prove quite as effective in bringing her victory.

What defender will meet the hero and/or the villain?
