Chapter 16 by Orlog4 Orlog4

Back to the tavern with good news.

Tell Tocar about what you found out

Cornflower Fields May be small and a little away from the main street, but there still is a small tavern close by the village center. Matching the name of the Village, the tavern is called, the Blue Flower. Well, you can think of worse names. The tavern is not primarily for travelers, but for the locals. A place to drink, relax after work and play some card or dice games. The tavern also offers something to eat and has at least two rooms to rent.

Tocar already took care of the room and food, but it seems he had no success in finding useful information so far. There are some villagers in the tavern, but most of them are simple farmers from the farms that have not been attacked yet. With the monster, the taxes and their families in danger, they have a lot of worries that they want to drown in thin beer. Many of them want to help Tocar in his mission, but very few of them have useful information and some are not sure what to think of mages like him.

You sit down next to Tocar as soon as a half-drunk, bald farmer with an unkempt beard stands up and leaves to play some dice games with his friends. Tocar sighs because of this waste of time and offers you some bread and cheese.

“Please tell me you had some luck at the village,” he says slightly frustrated, “all I know so far is that the monster lives in the forest. But that’s not helpful. We can’t search the whole forest tomorrow. Some of the guys here tried to describe the monster, but only saw its traces or heard about how it looks from another person. Never trust second-hand information, little one!”

“Well, I was able to talk to some residents,” you begin, “nobody of them saw the monster directly, just like in your case, they only heard about it, know somebody who saw it and such things. But after a while I was able to find out that almost all attacks were close to an old bandit hideout. Some old outpost from a war a long time ago. Since chimeras are created by humans, they normally prefer structures over caves. I think we should take a look at this tomorrow.”

“I think so too,” Tocar says and smiles proud, “I see it was a good choice to take you with me. You just saved us hours of searching. Good job, girl. Did you find out anything else?”

You summarize your conversation. Tocar nods pleased, even if there are no more important information. He seems just happy that you did your work. Tocar also heard about a missing adventurer who wanted to solve the problem before you arrived, but he is sure the guy is dead. Chimeras never leave injured behind. They are food, just like the dead.

“I guess we have everything we need,” Tocar mumbles and stretches his neck, “we should get some rest now. I will head to our room soon. You can stay here for some time if you want. Talk with the people, play a dice game or have a soup if you are hungry. But don’t get drunk or stay up too long! We head out tomorrow by the first cockcrow.”

You nod and look around. There is literally nothing else to do than the things he just told you. You can speak with the tavern owner who serves drinks and food, there also are some people from the village who play a dice game for little money, and in a corner, there is a guy trying to wake up his father who drank too much.

Are you doing anything? Or better straight to bed?
