Chapter 8 by crunchyspag crunchyspag

What's next?

Stalk her (But not in a creepy way. Really.)

You follow the girl through the woods, watching her. You want to talk to her, but have no idea what to say, and you realize after a while that your following her only makes the situation more awkward. For a time you creep along in the bushes, running scenarios through your head, hoping to find an appropriate reason to walk up to her. That is, until you spot a bear approaching the girl! You stir from your spot, intending to rush to the girl's side when you see her pull a pair of knives from her belt. Instead of running for her life, she raises her bladed arms as high as possible, and begins shouting all manner of unspeakable things at the animal as loud as she can. The bear stops in its path and roars at her half-heartedly, but ultimately saunters away.

You run up beside her. "That was amazing!" She looks you up and down in silence. "So, you finally decided to show yourself?" You are stunned, and can't say anything. She snorts at you. "I've lived my whole life in these woods, you think I can't tell when an amateur is following me. Now, what do you want, uh...." She seems to notice your fine clothes for the first time, "...sir?" You stumble to find your words. "I, um, just, just wanted to know your name. Oh, and how you scared that bear away. That was amazing!" She laughs at your exuberance.

"My name is Ruzena, Mr. Nobleman. Now for your other question, it takes some explaining for a greenhorn like yourself. You see, a lot of people think animals can't reason, but that's wrong. It's like my grandpa told me, and he spent his whole life in the woods, so he knew everything there was to know on the subject. See, bears almost never eat badgers. It's not because they can't kill badgers, they can do that easy. But badgers are fierce, and a bear can take some nasty wounds, even lose an eye or two to them. So, a bear thinks, 'A meal isn't worth being crippled', right? If you want to scare off a bear, you have to make yourself look like more trouble than your worth. Except during hibernation season, but that's something else entirely. Get it?" You look at the girl with newfound respect. Her ramble reminded you of your lessons in warfare, in fact there was a striking similarity. "So..." she says, "are we done here?"
