So Comfy

Here you were again. Tucked up inside of Elsie’s trunk in hiding from the family as you are rolled through the ship. Button you leave waiting in the cargo bay as Elsie smuggles you into your mother’s room. The plan was that she would drop you off in Mom’s room, tuck the trunk back in her room, then head back down to hang out with Button and wait for your signal, which would be a call down to the cargo bay from one of the wall panels as Button had shown you how to do. You had thought about the idea of staying in the trunk but it would be too conspicuous plus you were about done with staying inside of the cramped and stuffy space.

“Coast is clear.” El whispers as the lift doors open on the living level.

Moving swiftly but not so quick as to be suspicious El rolls you down the hall toward the passenger quarters. After a couple of minutes the crate rolls to a stop. There comes a knock, a wait, then the swoosh of a door opening.

“She’s not here. Hurry.”

The latches are undone and the lid flipped open. You scurry out of the trunk and into the room. It is identical to Elsie’s room in its blandness. In time you were sure the different rooms would get some character but there hadn’t even been time yet to put up pictures. Seeing absolutely nothing to differentiate it you whisper back to your sister. “You sure this is Mom’s room?”

“Um…yep.” El says as she shuts the trunk. “You sure about this Jesse? Still time to reconsider.”

“I got this El.” You reassure her. “This might take awhile but I’ll call as soon as I can. Now go, before someone sees you.”

You smile at each other and nod at the exact same time. “Good luck.”

With that El pushes the trunk down the hall and you close the door then turn out the lights.

For a time you pace back and forth the dimly lit space, running over what you were going to say to your Mom when she got here. After that you sit on the edge of the bed and contemplate how your life was about to change now that Button was going to be a part of it. This made you smile. You liked Button. A lot. Whether she was going to be you and Elsie’s loyal pup in the wild new world you were heading to or whether she was going to come back to Earth with you where you would figure things out there, either way you had a bright ray of sunshine as a new friend. What was done was done. Nobody could deny it now.

As you sit there in the warm, dark, silent room the lack of sleep from the night before and the stress of the day starts to weigh you down. You scooch back to the rear of the bed then stretch out. The mattress was on the firm side yet melded to your weight and shape better than any memory foam you’d ever felt. After a few minutes here you find your eyes starting to get heavy. Why not? Why not sneak in a little nap while you were waiting. You’d think and talk clearer with after a nice snooze. You slip beneath the blankets, between the smooth sheets that had the sensual sleek slide of silk yet the soft warmth of cotton flannel. You had never felt a fabric quite like it back on Earth. Wanting to feel it more you wriggle around and peel out of your shirt, pants, and socks, which you hide in a bundle in under the blankets near your feet. It might be a bit weird, waiting for someone in just your undies. But this was Mom. She’d seen it all before.

You close your eyes and luxuriate in these wonderful covers. They felt so nice against your skin. Sooo nice. Your tense muscles and stiff joints relax upon the perfect support beneath you. Sooo snug and cozy. Your mind drifts. Sooo comfy…
