Again Lux finds herself hurrying to keep up with Atara as she strides purposefully through the corridors. “Are you going to tell me what that thing is for?” she manages to ask, already short of breath as her uncomfortable exertions catch up with her.

“Explaining at a level you can understand would take more time than we have,” Atara replies. “Suffice to say that the rest of my people are in hiding, and this will give them enough reserve power to last for the time being.”

They come to a room with yet another mysterious device in the centre; this one is made up of stacked metallic rings that pulse dimly with an amber glow. Atara approaches the device and attaches the small cylinder to one side of it. Immediately the glow strengthens, and a resonant hum becomes audible. Atara watches it critically for a few moments, before giving a satisfied nod.

“All right,” Atara says, “let’s see about that – ”

She cuts off as the power cell begins to emit a shrill, rising whine. Before either of them can make a move, it erupts in a blinding flash and a thunderclap.

Lux feels herself thrown to the ground, dazed. Through the ringing in her ears, she hears shouts and running feet. This can’t be good…
