Chapter 81 by BlackMonosh BlackMonosh

What's next?

She seeks your help

The woman nods.

"Well, it would be difficult if I don't know the name of the lady I would help, wouldn't it?"

"Adelina," the woman says bashfully. "Adelina Knecht,"

Adelina has Knecht as her family name, which confirms your observation of her family being involved in farming since it means 'farmhand'. "So, Miss..." you correct yourself, "Mrs. Knecht, what kind of help your seeking?"

"I saw you riding with The Lord that day," she says, clearly referring to your day of arrival since you never went riding together with Muller after that. "And from the way you carry yourself, it's clear that you are his peer."

You nod to signal her to go on, not feeling the need to correct her; you're the king, not his peer.

"I..." Adelina can't help a lone tear from rolling down her cheek. "I beseech you, My Lord. Please intervene on my behalf." The tears fall down uncontrollably amidst her sobs. Being a gentleman, you move your seat next to her. You pull her in your arms while rubbing her back to console her.

After a while, Adelina steadies herself and continues with her story. She is a widow, having lost her husband and daughter to some sickness during the winter of the previous season. Because of that, she isn't able to keep up with taking care of the allocated field and risks being evicted.

You ask why she didn't remarry, to which she answered that all the eligible men were already married. She also says that because she and her husband are settlers from another region, she has no living family there.

After thinking about it, you realize her problem is quite difficult. As a king, you can issue a decree preventing her from being evicted, but that will lead to other problems surfacing. Why should you intervene on a subject of your noble?

It's clear that this is something you should stay out. You tell her you're not in the position to advise her lord what to do. That is not a lie, anything that you tell him will become an order, not advice. You get up to leave, but Adelina pulled your hand in desperation.

“Please, My Lord! My family is dead and the house and the farm are all I have left. If I leave, I'll die!"

You shake off her hand. "I'm sorry, but it's difficult,"

“Please!” Adelina says as she rushes to the door to prevent you from reaching the exit. "I’ll do anything you want! Please, My Lord, help me!"

Do you help her?
