Chapter 3
by Cirrus
Who gets the engagement ring?
Shannon
Shannon returned to her quiet apartment, the absence of her children's laughter a stark contrast to the bustling day she had spent at work. This week, they were with her ex-husband, leaving her with a solitude that she both cherished and found unsettling. She dropped her bag by the door, kicked off her shoes, and sank into the plush couch in her living room.
Her thoughts drifted to the conversation with Mike during lunch. She had always seen him as the epitome of pragmatism—an engineer with a logical mind, someone who analyzed every detail before making a decision. The notion that he could be swayed by a fantastical story about magic rings was bewildering. It left her feeling a mix of concern and disappointment.
"How could Mike, of all people, fall for something like this?" she muttered to herself, shaking her head.
But then, her thoughts softened. She understood the loneliness that had driven him to such **** measures. Shannon admired Mike's sincerity and kindness. He was handsome, with his striking green eyes and rugged beard, and had a warmth that made people feel at ease. Yet, despite his good looks and affable nature, his love life had always been lackluster. Shannon had often wondered why someone like him was still single.
She reached into her bag and pulled out the velvet pouch. The engagement ring inside was undeniably beautiful, its large diamond catching the light and sparkling brilliantly. Shannon was no expert in jewelry, but if she hadn't known better, she would have sworn it was real.
"At least it's a nice ring," she thought, examining it more closely. She feared the disappointment Mike would feel when he realized the magic was just a fantasy. It pained her to think about telling him she had given the ring to someone and nothing had happened.
With a sigh, she decided to indulge her curiosity. "Might as well see how it looks," she said to herself.
She slipped the ring onto her finger, expecting nothing more than a moment of idle amusement. The moment the ring settled into place, a strange warmth spread through her hand, radiating up her arm. Shannon's eyes widened in surprise as the ring seemed to pulse with a gentle glow.
Before she could react, the room around her blurred, and she felt a rush of energy course through her body. Her heart raced, and her mind was flooded with a whirlwind of emotions and sensations. It was as if she were being enveloped in a cocoon of light and warmth.
As the sensation intensified, Shannon felt her thoughts becoming clearer, sharper. Memories of Mike filled her mind—not just as her friend and colleague, but as a man she had always found quietly captivating. She remembered their countless conversations, the way he listened to her with genuine interest, his rare but heartfelt laughter.
Shannon felt a deep connection forming, an undeniable pull towards Mike. It was as if all the barriers she had built around her heart were being gently but firmly dismantled. She realized, with startling clarity, that she had always been drawn to him, more than she had ever admitted to herself.
The glow from the ring began to fade, leaving Shannon breathless and disoriented. She looked at her hand, the engagement ring now seeming even more beautiful, almost alive. Her heart pounded with the realization of what had just happened.
"Could it be real?" she whispered, a mix of awe and disbelief in her voice. "Did the magic actually work?"
The logical part of her mind screamed that it was impossible, that she must be imagining things. But the feelings coursing through her were undeniable. She felt a profound sense of love and connection with Mike, stronger than anything she had ever experienced before.
Shannon sat back on the couch, her mind racing. If the ring had such an effect on her, what did that mean for Mike? She realized she couldn't dismiss this as a mere scam. Something extraordinary had happened, and she needed to understand it.
She stared at the ring, her heart filled with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. She would have to talk to Mike, to explore this strange and wonderful turn of events together. The journey they were about to embark on was unknown and potentially perilous, but Shannon felt an unexpected thrill at the prospect.
Her thoughts turned to Mike, and she smiled softly. "Maybe this magic isn't such a bad thing after all," she murmured, feeling a newfound hope blossom within her.
