Pick Your System

Shadowrun

Shadowrun. One of the older, yet wackier, roleplaying games. Cyberpunk high-fantasy, with a tangled, confusing plot and a setting more cluttered than your grandpa's garage. It has gang-banger orcs, voodoo mobsters, dragon CEOs, zombie cyborgs, evil corporations run by aztec priests, magical wizards, hackers, and psychic technopathic wizard-hackers. Yet despite what you'd expect from such a game, the setting takes itself incredibly seriously.

5th edition is Shadowrun at its Shadowrunniest, in both system and setting. Everything - equipment, attributes, action resolution, worldbuilding - is presented in an absurd degree of needlessly granular detail. While other RPGs started streamlining themselves and de-emphasizing game mechanics and detailed worldbuilding in favor of playability, player agency and collaborative storytelling, Shadowrun's 5th edition doubled down on its old-school Gygaxian identity. It is everything modern dice-based RPGs are not supposed to be.

The world of Shadowrun is so convoluted that attempting to actually explain it in the process of running a game is hopeless. Every paragraph would have a dozen footnotes. Either you know the setting already, or just don't worry about understanding what the hell is going on in this crazy world and watch the action. Don't stress asking questions like "why is half of the former USA controlled by indian tribes, how did a 50 ton dragon get elected as president, why are there orcs and dwarves and elves and wizards on a near future version of planet earth?" Just roll with it.

In all seriousness, for those of you who've played the Shadowrun CRPG games, 5th edition takes place more than 10 years later, and a whole lot is changed, especially where technology and the "matrix" (internet) stuff is concerned. The gist of it is that "everything is online now, everything is wireless".
