Chapter 3 by CrawlingM CrawlingM

Coffee and breakfast, surf the net, or something else?

Search the internet for more info, school

You feel your curiosity is getting the better of you, so you grab a few slices of bread which you bring to your room, where you sit down by your computer. You boot up a few more precautions than usual (proxy VPN, high security browser with minimal script functions, etc,) before searching the internet for more information about the weirdness.

It doesn't take you long before you find a trail of crumbs in sites you would never really go to without risking getting law enforcement on your door. "This changes everything." a locked and pinned thread says, containing a link to a half-megabyte zip-file called Thaum_SDK_V0.84.

You shrug and download it, open it and see a bunch of .dll files and a few executables, as well as readme.txt files. But, you see that the time you have before you got to go to school is running out, so you wrap your laptop together and finally get to the bathroom.

You get through the first classes and go to the food court to get lunch, You've been ignoring the files you've downloaded for now, but you got a study hour afterwards."Any news about that quarantine in Japan? One of my favorite mangakas live there," Bradley asks the table as you sit down. Brad's the typical pale blonde anime geek that worries more about the next release of whatever he's into than school, though he has taken some of that training mentality to mind so he's not as fat as he used to be.

"Nothing as far as I can tell," Jerry says from behind his phone, where some mobile game was making addictive feedback sounds as he clicked the screen. Jerry's probably of jewish descent, curly dark hair and pale, but his family are avowed atheists that makes a point out of not adhering to any religion, meaning he doesn't really get it when people try to trigger him with jokes they assume would work on him. He's pretty good at math with plans to become an engineer and reads a lot of fantasy and sci-fi. "But I just skimmed the news," he adds as he winces and his phone makes a sad sound.

"What's with all of these things, anyway? it's not like they are shutting down air traffic, so it's probably not a disease," Rufus says, the self titled 'token black guy,' even though he's just half black and grew up in the richest family of the four of you. He's in pretty good shape though, and got the best game of you all while hiding his inner gamer nerd from the girls. "It seems like they're trying to keep whatever it is under wraps. I just don't understand what can be defeated with outright ignorance."

"Let's hope it's just a collective overreaction to something pathetic," you add as you chew on some poorly mashed potatoes. "I'm not really interested in going hiking to survive a zombie apocalypse." You continue, which predictably enough gets Bradley and Jerry going about their favorite plans for surviving a local zombie apocalypse.

Lunch ends as usual, and you depart to your respective classes. Which in your case, means sitting down with the laptop to do homework. You have other plans, however, as you open the unzipped folder and open the readme.txt file to try and understand a little what sort of potential malware you've been fenced off the dark side of the internet.
