Chapter 28 by Jpyric Jpyric

“Count me in!”

Risky gambit

The next couple days are a return to smooth sailing, and building anticipation. The former prisoners are quickly accepted as part of the crew, and after you explain your plans, enthusiastically express their desire to help. It seems that there’s plenty of spirit left in them, despite the hardship they’ve endured.

Early on the third day, land is spotted, and as expected, there is a town of some kind built up along the shore. Several small boats, little more than fishing vessels, are docked, and soon you see a flurry of activity as the Horizon is spotted. Captain Ben nods as you stand beside him, with Ferra and Alex along with.

“Hopefully we get a chance to talk. They’re clearly not just going to let us dock, look.”

He hands you his spyglass. Looking at the shoreline, you can see several ballista and other light artillery being readied. At the docks, groups of armed individuals are running to board the boats. You hand the spyglass back.

Ferra continues to watch the shore, her eyesight keener than most. “I have a thought, Nicholas. What if we stop outside the range of the ballista and drop anchor? Let them come to us?”

Ben nods, looking at the shore thoughtfully. “That could work. If they’re not out for blood, it would at least show that we’re not aggressive. And, worse case scenario, the three of you can drive them off pretty quickly.”

Alex laughs. “I probably shouldn’t be fighting on the ship. I don’t think my bondmate would appreciate it being on fire.”

Ben blinks in confusion for a moment, then laughs. “Right, efreet, got it. You’ll have to excuse me, I forget where I am sometimes. Regardless, I think this is the best plan. Unless you have an objection, Nicholas?”

You shake your head. “These are supposed to be the good guys, right? Let’s take the risk.”

Captain Ben nods, and heads off across the deck, giving orders as he does. Meanwhile, you and the girls watch as several boats are launched and head to intercept you. Ferra slips a hand into yours, giving it a squeeze. “I hope I’m right about this…”

Alex giggles. “If it goes wrong, it’s your fault!”

The two redheads smile at each other. Alex puts an arm around your waist and rests her head on your shoulder. Ferra leans against your other side, and sighs. The three of you feel a slight lurch as the anchor drags the boat to a halt, and the sails are furled. You watch as the boats approach, each loaded with people. You can see many of them watching you and the girls as they come closer.

All you can do now is wait.
