Ring Construction

The Ring was constructed in layers, from the dark and cold Blackside, to the Sunward side. 4 main layers constitute any part of the Ring.

The Blackside is filled with huge megastructure machines and drones for repair, often exposed to the vacuum of space it's a dangerous place to be for humans. Deeper than the other 3 layers combined, it holds the most mass and secrets of all the layers. Not many people live here, and if so it's usually on the upper levels. A few Handlers could have their refuge here but they are quite well hidden.

Above the Blackside is the Gutters, a network of sewage and electrical conduit interspersed with lower class living quarters. The people here are poor, dirty, hungry. The gangs are looked up to here as they provide opportunities, however dangerous. Often corpos scour a sectors Gutters for new recruits, taking young people and children away to sometimes better lives. Only select areas of the Gutters ever see sunlight, deep chasms in the megalopolis of the surface are rare.

Next is the Understreets, starting at anywhere below the Topside street it ranges from as hazardous as the Gutters, to as safe as the topside itself, if that's saying anything. Often 50-60 levels deep it consists of people from the lowest of the poor trying to make their way up, to middle class people that can be content most of the time.

The Topside is the premier place to live on the Ring, although some say it's overrated. The towering skyscrapers and domiciles make this a still claustrophobic place at times. The price of living goes up the higher you are, those at the top living in the lap of luxury that is inconsiveable to the Gutter. Many wealthy individuals have at least a retinue of Steeltoes if not a small private military to protect them and their private interests.
