Chapter 19 by Mike the Red Mike the Red

What's next?

Return to Cabo

Eventually, I resigned myself to heading inside to get some sleep, despite the niggling desire for blood creeping around the back of my mind. So, I climbed out of the hot tub, leaving Katja to bond with another little dragonfly.

The morning came too soon, but things were rectified by a slightly too greasy breakfast and two cups of much-needed coffee.

Having seen Katja with her dragonflies, I was less concerned about having them in the car with me, but she decided to ride with Carter in the semi, so I was left listening to my workout playlist on my phone until I got sick of it. Still the drive continued.

Finally, {if investigateSailboat > 0} seventy-eight{else}ninety-two{endif} hours after I left, we entered Cabo San Lucas once again.

Somehow, the city seemed less alive.

The little voice that belonged to my conscience said, "It's because, this time, Mira isn't here to greet you."

To which, I pointed out that she hasn't actually greeted me last time.

"But she wanted to and she left that note promising as much."

Which made my eyes start to water and that just made me feel stupid. After all, who got emotionally overwhelmed after a conversation with themselves?

The answer was obvious: lonely twenty-seven-year-old women who just discovered they're turning into a vampire after they killed a guy who was trying to kidnap them, just like he kidnapped their baby sister.

The remainder of the trip to our staging area in San Jose was a blur and I was glad when I could park the car and just spend a moment to myself.
