Chapter 10 by fantaghiro fantaghiro

Rebecca was still there and wanted to take you both out to dinner that night.

"There he is, the man of the moment!" Rebecca announced as you walked in the door, finding both her and Randall sitting on the living room couch, chatting and drinking coffee. "We were just talking about you."

"You, uh, you were?" you replied, surprised to find her actually still here.

"Yeah. Rebecca was just saying she wants to take us both our for dinner," Randall grinned, looking rather cozy sitting there beside her, the two of them still dressed in their post workout clothes (which consisted mainly of baggy sweatshirts and sweatpants), "Pretty sweet, huh?"

Ignoring your 'mom's' rather uncharacteristic phrasing of this question, Rebecca explained, "I thought I'd treat you both. Seeing as it'll give us all a chance to properly catch up," asking you, "You up for it, Tim?"

Though you didn't feel all that comfortable with the thought of having to fake your relationship with Randall in front of someone else so soon after the accident (especially over as long a period as dinner and whatever followed), you were kind of put on this spot by this, with the two of the staring at you eagerly, awaiting your reply. "Uhm...yeah. Sure. Why not?" you finally said, figuring that you couldn't really say no, nor that you had much of a choice in the matter.

"Great!" Rebecca smiled, "I was thinking maybe Italian or something."

Randall didn't seem so keen on this idea however (the only Italian food he ever ate being pizza) and chimed in with, "I dunno. Italian's good and all, but what would be even better is a burger. I feel like I haven't had one of those for ages." You could see now why he appeared so keen, this being a chance to to avoid having to do anymore cooking himself, and to get some of his favorite food all at the same time.

"A burger? Really Jen? So all that working out we did this morning was for nothing then?"

"I thought the whole point of it was so that we could eat what we want," he replied with a shrug, sounding rather naive, "Don't tell me we have to eat rabbit food and stuff now too?"

Looking at him with a hint of confusion for a moment, Rebecca eventually broke into a smile, telling 'your mother', "You know, I'm really not sure if you're just winding me up or not, Jen. You're the one who put me onto this whole workout plan and pasta diet remember?"

Feeling the need to jump in at this point; Randall clearly not being entirely up to speed with everything he needed to know about your mom and Rebecca's relationship (or the fact that your mom had been on a bit of a health kick as of late - explaining the gym visits and diet), you awkwardly chuckled, "Heh. Course she does! She's just, uh, kidding around. Aren't you mom?"

"Eh...sure. Yeah," Randall told her, picking up your cue and quickly changing his tune, "I'm just messing with you. I love all that healthy stuff. Mmh-mm! (hamming it up a bit as he rubbed at his stomach)"

Thankfully accepting this and shaking her head in amusement at some joke she clearly didn't understand, Rebecca then pulled herself up off the couch and said, "Well anyway, I just need to nip to the little girls room. I'll leave it up to you two to decide where we can eat."

Walking out of the living room then, leaving you and Randall alone for the time being, you immediately turned to your friend and began chastising him for acting so out of character, reminding him that he was supposed to be a 40 year old woman now - scratch that, was a 40 year old woman now, and so had to start acting like one around other people (especially your mom's best friend).

"What, so just because your mom didn't eat burgers and stuff, I'm not supposed to either?" he questioned, not liking the sound of that one bit, "That totally sucks! Can't she like, I dunno, change her eating habits and eat what I eat instead, seeing as I'm her?"

"I dunno. Maybe...I guess," you told him, figuring that there was probably some room for compromise somewhere, "But not right now, and not right away either, otherwise Rebecca will suspect something. You've got to try and act more like she would around other people and stuff. You can't just be you! Not unless you want her finding out the truth..."

"Dude, I honestly doubt she'd even believe it if she did. Besides, I've done an okay job so far."

Having not really been privy to Randall and Rebecca's interactions yesterday or this morning, you really had no real way of knowing this for sure, but decided to move the conversation quickly on to what exactly had happened at the gym this morning (recalling his excitement the night before and feeling extremely curious to find out yourself). Becoming rather animated, his face lighting up at the question - clearly being just as eager to tell you as you were to hear - Randall started to explain how "unbelievably awesome it was" and how "totally worth it" all the boring working out parts had been, but unfortunately being interrupted by Rebecca's return from the bathroom before he could get to the juicy parts.

Disappointed by this, realizing that you were now going to have to wait till later to hear Randall's tale in full, you then headed upstairs to get changed, leaving them both to it, but not before catching a snippet of Randall's performance as 'your mom'. It was incredibly strange to witness, it had to be said, having gotten somewhat used to, over this last week or so, your mother's body behaving like his lazy, carefree 18 year old self. So overhearing him now trying to act all grown up and 'womanly' was pretty surreal, having yet to quite get it down pat (occasionally sounding like a bad impression or something). Not that he wasn't passing of course...but then again, as he'd told you earlier, it's not like anyone was likely to figure out he wasn't actually your mother, so you couldn't really tell for sure.

After getting changed out of your school clothes, and after Randall and Rebecca had changed out of their gym gear a little while later; Randall once again surprising you by choosing to wear one of your mother's dresses (presumably having been put up to it again by Rebecca), the three of you got into Rebecca's car and headed off to the restaurant. It was a nice little place, not too far away, that had good food and wasn't overly priced, and even though you weren't entirely happy about the fact that the two of you were being thrown into masquerading as mother and son so soon, you were at least glad that you were getting something to eat that wasn't either take out or overdone meatloaf, as you tucked into the steak Rebecca had been generous enough to buy you.

During the meal Rebecca asked you pretty much the same questions she always did whenever you talked; how was school? How was your love life? all that kind of stuff, but she also seemed rather interested in the car accident, asking you about that too (Randall having seemingly given her a pretty vague answer). Giving her a somewhat vague response yourself, describing some of what you remembered, but leaving out the most important parts of course - still finding it rather difficult to talk about the accident that had taken your mother's life, Randall thankfully saw you struggling and stepped in, deflecting the conversation elsewhere and saving you from bursting into tears.

The rest of the evening went pretty much the same way, with you and Randall having to intermittently save the conversation when the other one ran into trouble, almost like some sort of comedy sketch or something. Rebecca noticed this of course, but appeared to find it sort of funny, pointing out how close you guys seemed now, almost as if you were more like best friend's than mother and son (which was of course incredibly perceptive of her, but also ironic, seeing as she didn't actually know that it was indeed the truth).
