Chapter 11 by fantaghiro fantaghiro

What's next?

Rebecca suggests going to see a movie after the meal.

It was very strange watching Randall pretend to be your mom. You had to admit that he wasn't doing a half-bad job. Obviously he had been around your mom enough to have fairly good grasp on her behavior. At least good enough that Rebecca seemed to accept his impersonation. You, on the other hand, knew him and your mom well enough to pick apart his act. You had to avoid wincing several times when he went a little overboard in his act. You tried to subtly signal him when he went off-course with mixed results.

Randall seemed to be enjoying himself for the most part, though you could see that he was in his 'test' mode for much of the evening - the way he would tense slightly and become more serious when having to focus on something. Eventually he seemed to fall into a comfortable routine, relaxing more. You noted that after you called him on his 'Randall' movements or mannerisms a few times, he began mirroring Rebecca, carefully copying the way she would sit or eat her food. "Pretty smart!" you said to yourself, wishing you had thought to suggest that to Randall earlier. "Use Rebecca - and other 'mature' women- as a model for him to follow. Good thinking Randall!"

You made a decision that, starting tomorrow, you would help Randall get better at being your mom. Dig out some family videos to have him really watch the way she talked and moved, interacted with others. It wasn't just about keeping up the masquerade. You felt a kind of pride in your mother, and you didn't want Randall tarnishing her memory and image. It was one thing to sit around the house in sweats playing video games together - but when dealing with other people and going out in public, you wanted him to show respect for you mom in how he dressed and behaved. Still, you couldn't complain too much. Randall was doing far better than you ever would have dreamed. You knew he wasn't motivated by the same pride in your mother, so clearly something else was pushing him to try so hard. Simply not wanting to be found out? Getting close to Rebecca or other women? Or maybe just deciding to have fun with all this? You weren't sure what was driving him to work so much at his act but you were glad something had encouraged him.

Lost in your analysis of Randall's performance, you completely missed the substance of their conversation near the end of the meal. "Sounds great, Rebecca! Does that work for you Tim?" Randall asked.

"Huh? What?" you asked. "Sorry, I missed the question," you said shamefaced.

Rebecca laughed. "That's okay, Tim. I'm sure you're not interested in the conversation of two 'old women' like us. I don't blame you for tuning us out."

Randall said "Rebecca suggested we all go to a movie after dinner. I said we'd love to go."

"What are we going to see?" you asked, wondering what else you had missed.

Randall answered "Since it's her treat, it's her choice."
