Chapter 10
by LittleMate
Will you finally claim the Temple?
Absolutely!
Having woke up the next evening you go about collecting the food from the garden and orchard attached to it. It seemed that each apple tree dropped five fresh apples a day for a total of fifteen, while the lemons dropped three for a total of six. The wheat, while inedible on its own, could be harvested and seemed to regrow every twenty-four hours so you could have up to five loaves of bread if you found a way to grind the sheaves into flour. Deciding that since you did not have the resources yet, you planted the five sheaves into the empty row on the right. Knowing that after a few more days you will have all the wheat planted the temple had prior to its collapse! While you wanted to spend more time weeding both gardens to maximize your production, you recruit Rowan into helping you chip away at the two remaining blocks.
Fenris, for his small part, helps collect sticks after a stroke of inspiration leads you to tucking the animal scarf you got from Edmund under his current collar. When you pulled back, he paused for a moment, ‘Bark?’ It seemed to allow nominal communication between the hero and his tamed companion, or at least that is how Rowan explained it. “Heh, I knew you were always smarter than you looked Fenris!” ‘Rude!’ “Yeah, yeah, be a good boy and collect some wood and you’ll get belly rubs!” ‘Yay!’
After half an hour, one of the blocks disappeared and both you and Rowan sat down exhausted, eating through your store of apples and lemons to help replenish your stamina that much quicker. You go back to swinging at the block with renewed vigor, ready to face whatever vile creature dare squats in your holy temple! Soon enough, with only a few swings left before the block vanishes, you stop and call Fenris who comes tail wagging. ‘Good?’ “Yes, Fenris, you did good!” You rub his head, giggling at the series of ‘Ahhhs’ and ‘Ohhhs’ that tumble from him. “Now, listen close, we are going to knock down this block as soon as the stars come out and whoever is inside is a bad!” ‘RUFF!’
After another quick breather and eating an apple a piece, you hand Rowan one of your two health potions. Two more swings from each of you and the block vanished, an eerie silence of oppression weighed down on all three of you. The tunnel leading up to the Sanctum was not as dilapidated as the temple itself, though you had to climb over or around a few blocks. You almost fell when one of the stairs broke, thankfully Rowan grabbed you, his hands digging into the fabric around your bosom. "S-Sorry!" He squeaked, almost reflexively letting you go.
"Level up some more and I might consider it~!" He let go that time, you smirked at him as you continued onward to the entrance to the Sanctum itself. Sending Rowan to scout ahead due to heritage was the right choice when after a few tense minutes he comes back.
"There's a freakin' necromancer in there! An elf, though he kind of looks like you! I think-" Before he could finish, you knocked him aside as you strode up the handful of stairs into the wide expanse of the Sanctum. Your heartbroken twofold at the sight. Multiple panels of the beaten then polished silver were missing from the ceiling, the glass ornaments in the shape of the constellations were shattered or hanging limply, the Star Well itself was clouded with chunks of stone breaching the surface. Secondly, it was the male kneeling at the Star Well, back turned to you, chanting in a sick and twisted foreign tongue.
Spotting some skeletons with rusty swords and rotten shields hanging loosely from their arms as well as a few shuffling zombies you were pretty confident you could win. You knew the necromancer was a higher level than you but not by much in the glimpse of his character sheet you saw.
"Alright, Rowan you sneak around and try to one-shot that necromancer! Fenris and I will distract his stupid guards!" 'Yes!' Seemed like Fenris was onboard, Rowan nodded and faded into the shadows. Grabbing one of the rocks, you hurled it to hit the far side near a pile of them. The skeletons and zombies straightened and shuffled towards it; the necromancer never stopped chanting but turned his hooded head before dismissing it as fallen debris. You judged Rowan to be halfway to the Necromancer when you and Fenris snuck out from the doorway, getting closer to the hoard.
A simple nod had Fenris pouncing on one of the Zombies who poofed from the sneak attack, one of the skeletons did as well from your starbolt. The necromancer jolted back, chanting interrupted and the oppressive air lifted. You did not know what effects it was causing but they were gone now to matter any, lifting your crozier you pointed at the man as he turned to face you. "In the name of the Stars, I declare you a heretic for your vile crimes agai-..."

Your heart stopped, the zombie clambering towards you was body slammed by Fenris as you fell back uncontrollably. "N-No... it c-can’t be..." Fenris yelped when a bolt of black hit his hide, skittering away after breaking the zombies neck. "H-He’s not supposed..." You felt your mind snap, suddenly there you were giddy as the Abbot passed out the letters to his flock.
Your parents or siblings always made sure to write to you, your mother drilling it into all your heads that family is everything. Each member had their part within the whole play. You always opened your eldest brothers first as you had always had a special relationship with each other. Whispers around court even said he would defy tradition and take you as his consort when he became King-Prelate. It was not unheard of; your parents were cousins after all. You had only read the first part of his letter saying he was going to use mothers Star Chamber to visit you secretly, using its holy powers to teleport him wherever he wanted, when the Sundering struck. You could not believe he had made it and you both died so close to each other.
Your mind snapped back when you heard Fenris yelp again, surrounded by zombies who were trying to tear him apart. You blasted one then another, tears running down your cheeks as the man’s hood was knocked back. Excruciating pain seared your chest as you collapsed to your knees. You could hear the man, your brother, grunt from Rowan’s sneak attack. Rowan ran as fast as he could to your collapsed form, hands shaking your shoulders when he arrived. "MAEVA!" You could barely hear the terse whisper or feel the shaking. "GET UP! THEY'LL SURROUND US!" Words tumbled out silent, your lungs straining for more oxygen. He finally gripped you under your arms and tugged you back down behind the Star Well, your legs flailing useless as was the rest of you until after a sweet inhale of air could you yell.
"NOOOO!" Fenris whimpered beside you, scared at his mistress’s meltdown, 'Help?' Rowan cursing up a storm as he readied his rapier and dirk. Your brother paused as he stared at your white and silver clad form splayed out before him, fabric shimmering in the starlight.
"Mae..." You found the strength to scramble forward as it seems he survived.
"Y-Yes! Maelor! It's me! Maeva! Your sister..." His face scrunched up, eyes flashing from their sickly green to silver then back again as he fell back into the broken Star Well. "Rowan! Use the manacles!" You smacked one of the skeleton’s head off with your crozier, giving Fenris the last of the venison which brought his health back up to half. 'Nom!' Rowan tossed his rapier and dirk to the side, the holy manacles materializing in his hands as he wrestled your brother into the muck. Water splashing everywhere as they tossed and turned, trying to drown one another as you and Fenris fought on desperately. A deep slash across your left arm made it hang useless, summoning a starbolt inside the offending skeleton had him explode in shards that weakened you even more, though it did manage to take out the zombie right behind him.
A bright flash and quake of the earth knocked you all down, the undead crumbling to dust as you heard three distinctive DINGS. Rolling onto your side as your wounds reknit themselves, you could see Rowan hauling your limp brother out from the Star Well. Gasping for breath he glared at you, “Maeva, you owe me a stiff drink or ten!” He pushed your brother over the edge with a dull thud before joining him, sinking down to rest his back against the well’s wall. You crawled over, hands brushing aside the wet hair plastered against your brother’s handsome face.
“Maelor! Is it really you?” Using your truesight to confirm it really was him, you clutched him to your chest and sobbed. Only after Rowan picked clean the bags the undead left did he shake you from your shock and grief. 'Foot! Ouch!"
“Mae... Claim the land so we can properly rest and maybe downstairs there is a way to cure him…?” You nodded, wiping away the tears with your sleeve before laying your **** brother back down. With a sigh you approached the Star Well, glancing up to see the stars shining above you through the oculus. Pulling out the crystal you clenched it so hard you felt your hand bleed and your blood drip into the well below you before the crystal shattered.
