Chapter 5
by doppledon
Do you forgive yourself?
Mostly...with a caveat.
Slowly the Drake removes its forehead from your forehead and nuzzles your cheek with its nose. When you open your eyes you see the Drake staring back into your eyes. The glow almost blinding now. You feel the forgiveness but know you still have to apologize.
"I am so sorry for my actions", you begin, "I was blinded by greed. I am getting on in my years for the profession I've chosen and wisdom often times eludes me. I promise from now until I die that I will not take any life whose sentience is unknown to me." You then bow to one knee before the Drake and lower your head.
"I promise to honor the wisdom I have learned this day and pray that the gods will guide my hand to those who need it. I make this promise to you Lady Drake and to myself upon pain of **** for breaking this promise."
You remain knelt down before the Drake. Moments pass and you are unsure of if you should remain knelt down for any longer when you feel the Drake lay its head between your shoulder and neck. There you remain for several minutes until the Drake eventually raises it head off of you. At some point your eyes had watered a bit, so you rub at your eyes while standing back up. Night has fully fallen now as you look around the site.
"If you would permit it Lady Drake I would camp here with you tonight," you request while turning to look at her.
"I don't think there is much in these woods that would take on the both of us, but they might try a go at you if they discovered you alone and not in full control of your hind end." The Drake twists its head to the side as if pondering the situation and eventually nods while letting out a rumbling grunt.
"Excellent," you say, "I will get a small fire going and we can awkwardly stare into it as if I didn't try to kill you just shortly before this," you jest. The Drake is caught off guard by your comment and takes a moment before you start to hear a deep rumble in its chest while its front end bobs up and down. You had never heard a Drake laugh before, but wasn't surprising how it sounded at all.
"I'll get some firewood and you can work on getting your hind end back under full control," you state while spinning around and walking off into the woods. Finding wood wasn't difficult. It was an old forest and plenty of dry kindling and logs littered the ground. You picked the best firewood you could. Normally you picked whatever you could see when it came to finding firewood in the dark, but tonight was different. It was like you could see more than you normally could at night. Must be something in the air you decide. Eventually you make your way back to the Drake and deposit the load of firewood near your pack. You notice the Drake is now on all four feet so to speak. The hind legs appear slow and stiff, as well as the tail, but she's up and moving around again.
"Wow, you are healing way faster than I would for a wound like that," you exclaim, "I would be down for a few days at least before I even started to be able to move my toes. Then again you seem to have a bit of magic in you if I had to guess just based on your eyes glowing so brightly."
After you make that statement the Drake's head snaps to you and she stares at you intensely. She then begins to close her eyes tightly and shaking her head back and forth. Opening them briefly to stare at you again, and then repeating the process. Eventually she stops the movements, looks at you, and then lets out a deep sigh. She gives you another once over and seemingly shrugs her shoulders a bit before slowly moving to a tree and plopping down to watch you work. Taking that as your sign for where to set up you set the firewood close enough to provide her with warmth and go back to your pack to get your fire starting equipment which consists of a blunt knife and flint. When you grab the knife a blue light shines off of its blade and it catches your eye. Almost blind you begin looking for the source of the blue light, but you are unable to find it after looking in every direction. You look at the Drake who seems to have almost a smirk on her face as she watched you frantically look around.
Eventually you give up looking as you don't want to appear crazy and look back at the knife as if it tricked you somehow. The blue light shines into your eyes again as you look directly at the blade. Then it dawns on you. Carefully you angle the blade so you can see your reflection on its blade.
What do you see?
